Subject

 I want to share about the knowledge of range gear in Volvo Truck (FM 400).
 

Problem/ Complaint

This problem is the high range cannot operate

Symptom

Cannot select the high range, it cannot effect 4th, 5th and 6th gear.

Troubleshooting /Service Step

In this problem, the spool in relay valve is jammed because of the spool in which three O- rings are damage. So,
spring force cannot overcome the spool as result of high range cannot operate. Therefore the spool of three new O-
rings is replaced. After that the spool is not jammed and spring force is affected. Finally, the high range can operate.

Analysis

The range gear control is positioned on the gear lever. This consists of a valve that stops or lets through control air to
the relay valve on the range cylinder. This problem is deal with the relay valve. The structure of relay valve has a spool
in which comprise of three O rings. The function of the relay valve if to direct the air to one side of the piston
depending on the choice of gear. The relay valve is fitted with a spring force. When the control on the gear lever is set
on low range, control air is let through to the relay valve, overcoming the spring force and making the control side.
