The article that we’ve choose is entitled “The vaccination dilemma” which is written by
Suzanna Pillay which was published in the News Straits Times online page on January 17,
2016. This passage of article emphasizes on the important of vaccination and the reasons
why certain group of people refuse to be vaccinated.

The tone of the passagers of the article are informative and the author’s tone relays the
information in a neutral and factly manner. Futhermore there is a lack of biasness in the way
the article is return.

It is derived from the words of the article that it’s intended audience is for the general public’s
information however, it is submitted that if the article is read a upon a more specific basis the
intended audience would be particularly for parents that have a misconception of the
importance of vaccination for the preventation of harmful illnesses.

First and foremost, the main issue is that same people travel to countries which are more
prone to vaccine preventable diseases (VPD) there is a risk that an unimmunised child may
bring a new disease to that country or may be infected by a disease from that country.

The point of view from the author’s perspective can be derived to be baffling as the author’s
states that this issue is not limited to those staying in rural areas as is commonly believe.
However it is also seen to be rapidly a growing issue in the urban areas. The author’s also
quotes the director general of health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah that although Malaysia
has achieved low level of VPD, it is still seculating among us and it is clear from the official
statistics that there has been an increase of refuser of vaccination.

The author then continues to show concerns on the issue of the reason as to why
vaccination is refused on a large scale. The main reason which can be stated as a second
issue is the wide influence by the anti vaccination groups who opt for traditional medicine
instead.

In relation to the point of view, the author again quotes Datuk Dr Noor Abdullah where he
acknowledges the benefit of traditional medicine however is concern a to the
misunderstanding of the importance of vaccination. The growing trend of the use of social
media has negatively impacted the believe of parents in the contents of vaccines and has
caused unnecesessary illness, dissabilities and death among children.

It is observed here since these quotes are used by the author inconveying the information,
there seem to be a bias as to the important of vaccination.

The author goes on to inform that doubt surrounding the nature of vaccine and its content
happen mainly due to the lack of knowledge on it and being carried away with family
tradition. There is a danger of combining modern medicine with traditional medicine in which
there can be many side effect. In that regard, JAKIM which is the responsible party
concerning this issue has been researching every vaccine used by the government and
confirming its safety. The author seem to persuade its readers that vaccine are safe in the
last two line of the article where the “harus” status is given if JAKIM approves the specific
vaccine.

In conclusion, we as citizan should be wise in accepting the government call and support the
good intention of preventing dangerous illnesses from resurfacing. In this era of globalisation
and development of modern medicine, this issue can be easily controlled and prevented.
