SEQUENCE
A sequence is a set of numbers written in successions. Each number of the sequence is called term. It is a
function whose domain is the finite set {1,2,3,...n} or the infinite set {1,2,3,...}
We often encounter sequences that form a pattern such as that in the sequence.
Special Sequence
Fibonacci sequence is a mathematical sequence consisting of a sequence in which the next term originates
by addition of the previous two.
Example: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8,...
Harmonic sequence is a sequence such that the reciprocals of the terms form an arithmetic sequence.
1 1 1 1
Example: , , , ,... is harmonic since their reciprocal is 2, 6, 10, 14,...
2 6 10 14
Arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is obtained by adding a constant called
the common difference.
Example: 1, 3, 5, 7...
NOTE: 3 – 1 = 2, 5 – 3 = 2, 7 – 5 = 2 the common difference is 2.
Geometric sequence is a sequence where each term after the first is obtained by multiplying the preceding
term by a nonzero constant called the common ratio.
Example: 2, 4, 8, 16,...
NOTE: 4/2 = 2, 8/4 = 2, 16/8 = 2 the common ratio 2 is obtain by dividing any term by the preceding term.

Listing The Terms In A Sequence

Example: Write the first four term of the sequence
an = 2n + 1
Solution: Substitute the natural numbers from 1 to 4 for n one after the other.
a1 = 2(1) + 1 = 2 + 1 = 3 a3 = 2(3) + 1 = 6 + 1 = 7
a2 = 2(2) + 1 = 4 + 1 = 5 a4 = 2(4) + 1 = 8 + 1 = 9
The first four terms of the sequence are 3,5,7,9.

ACTIVITY 2: Term after Term

1. an = 4n
2. an = 2n – 1
3. an = 3n
4. an = n/3
5. an = 3n + 5

ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence where every term after the first is obtained by adding a constant
called the common difference.
An arithmetic sequence is a sequence such that an – an-1 = d for all natural numbers n > 1.
The nth term of an arithmetic sequence is defined as an = a1 + (n – 1)d,
Where a1 = the first term n = the number of term
an = the nth term d = the common difference
Examples:
A. The first term of an arithmetic is 4 and the C. In an arithmetic sequence a3 = 10 and a6 = 19,
common difference is 2. Find the ninth term. find a1 and d.
Solution: a1 = 4, d = 2 and n = 9 Solution: a3 = 10 and a6 = 19
an = a1 + (n – 1)d a 6−a 3 9
d= d= = 3
a9 = 4 + (9 – 1)2 6−3 3
a9 = 4 + (8)2 19−10
d=
a9 = 4 + 16 = 20 6−3
NOTE: If the common difference is not known, it a6 = 19, d = 3 and n = 6
must be found before the formula is applied. an = a1 + (n – 1)d 19 = a1 + 15
a3 = a1 + (6 – 1)3 19 – 15 = a1
B. Find the fifteenth term of the arithmetic
19 = a1 + (5)3 4 = a1
sequence 25, 21, 17, 13,…
Solution: d = 21 – 25 = -4
D. If a1 = 15, an = 395 and d = 5, find the value of
a1 = 25, n = 15 and d = -4
n.
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
Solution: a1 = 5, an = 395 and d = 5
a15 = 25 + (15 – 1)(-4)
an = a1 + (n – 1)d
a15 = 4 + (14)(-4)
395 = 15 + (n – 1)(5)
a15 = 4 – 48 = 44
395 = 15 + 5n – 5
395 = 5n + 15 – 5
395 = 5n + 10
395 – 10 = 5n
385 = 5n
77 = n
