Using the passive voice with different tenses

Tense Active Voice Passive Voice

Present Simple Jamie writes the letters. The letters are written
by James.
Past simple Jamie wrote the letters. The letters were
written by Jamie.
Present Continuous Jamie is writing the letters. The letters are being
written by Jamie.
Present Perfect Jamie has written the letters. The letters have been
written by Jamie.
Future simple (going to) Jamie is going to write the The letters are going
letters. to be written by
Jamie.
Future simple (will) Jamie will write the letters. The letters will be
written by Jamie.
Past continuous Jamie was writing the letters. The letters were being
written by Jamie.
Past perfect The scientists had found the The cure had been
cure, but it was too late. found, but it was too

Future perfect The scientists will have found A cure will have been

It is uncommon to use the passive voice with the following tenses:


 Present perfect continuous
 Future continuous
 Future perfect continuous
 Past perfect continuous
