In an article “Teenage Sleep Deprivation Impact” , the controversial issue discussed
here is whether teenage sleep deprivation impact is a serious problem in the teen-aged , in
terms of school. The author argues that lack of sleep as a teenage students will impact
academically, healthy, attention and performance in daily life. However, the author also
opposing that students should sleep less to get done urgent things.
To support the author argument, several types of supporting details in the article,
presented by the author include statistic / factual data, research findings and personal
observations. The first example for statistics / factual data is an average teen needs
approximately 8 to 9 hours of sleep that a best academic and physical performance during
schools hours. Studies show that teens on and average are getting between 6.5 and 7.3
hours of sleep. The second one is in Sept. 2007, the schools administration began to
consider his idea of changing the schools schedule. In Oct. 2007, the schools voted to
decide if it was reasonable 61 to 27 voted in favor of the plan. The old start time of school
7:55 a.m was now moved to 8:30 a.m. The third is there studies also show that 16 to 60
percent of road accidents involve sleep deprivation. The next factual data is, it is estimated
that glucose metabolism will deteriorate in a period of seven to 10 days of limited sleep by as
much as 30% to 40%. Next is, research findings. The first example of research finding is,
according to Dr. Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University “Teens with A’s on their
report cards received an hour of more sleep each night and students who had D’s and F’s on
their report cards only had two hours less sleep then the students with A’s. The second is,
researchers in Australia and New Zealand found that people who drive after being awake for
17 to 19 hours performed worse than those with a blood alcohol level (B.A.L) of 0.05
percent. The third finding research is, according to the National Highway Safety Traffic
Administration more than 100,000 accidents, 40,000 injuries, and 1,500 people are killed in
the U.S. every year due to crashes by drivers who are sleepy. The next supporting details in
the text is personal observation. For example, Sleep deprivation can also negatively impact
physiology that is critical for athletic performance. Athletes can suffer from the loss of
sleep/sleep deprivation. Impairments include athlete’s motor functions, and the inability to
control all aspects of muscular movement fully.
In this article the author fulfills the aspect of relevance, objectivity, completeness,
credibility and validity. The supports given are relevant as they are related to the argument.
For example, teens get a bad record for staying up late night, waking up late for school and
falling asleep in class. It is necessary for teens to get enough sleep in order for them to
function properly during school hours on a daily basis. Most of the support consists fact and
clear evidence such as data from National Highway Safety Traffic Admission, Jim Home,
PhD director of the sleep research laboratory at Loughborough University in England prove
that the author’s argument has objectivity. The author presents the strongest opposing
argument proving that the argument is complete. The author argument is valid and credible
since the argument is very well reason and convincing.
An inference of the text is sleep deprivation especially among teenagers in school
give an negative impact and directly affect their ability to function at school, healthy, and
behavioral problems. As a conclusion, sleep deprivation have a huge impact on human life
regardless of age. Therefore, people need to make sure they have enough sleep to provide
a healthier and safer life and that not only for students.
From the article, the author's purpose was to inform about the impact of sleep
deprivation. According to Dr.Carskandon, a sleep researcher at Brown University , teenagers
who scored A’s on their reports card is a students who have enough sleep each night
meanwhile, students who had D’s or F’s on their report card did not have enough sleep each
night.
The tone that's been used by the author was concern. “By not getting the necessary
amount of sleep can impair alertness, attention span, reaction time, awareness of the
environment, concentration, Loss of motivation and fixating (stalling) on one thought”. The
author was being serious, “Sleep deprivation is a serious problem in the teen-aged world.
Teens get a bad record for staying up late at night, waking up late for school and falling
asleep in class”.
Finally, the intended group that the author wan tackle was a group of people that is
teenage students. Since the author would like to share the impact of sleep deprivation as a
students.
