Short story:
A short story is a piece of prose fiction that typically can be
read in one sitting and focuses on a self-contained incident or series of
linked incidents, with the intent of evoking a "single effect" or mood.

Element of short story:

There are 5 element of short story. The elements are as following

1. Character
2. Setting
3. Plot
4. Conflict
5. Theme

Character:
Character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes in the
action of a short story or other literary work.
 Type of character :
Protagonist
 A protagonist is a main character who generates the action of a story
and engages the reader's interest and empathy. The protagonist is
often the hero or heroine.

Antagonist
The opposite of the protagonist is the antagonist.
An antagonist is a character who opposes the protagonist. 

Setting:
The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens.
Authors often use descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings,
seasons or weather to provide a strong sense of setting.

Plot:
A plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the
central conflict.

Conflict/Climax:
The conflict is a struggle between two people or things in a short
story. The main character is usually on one side of the central conflict.
The conflict is in between
1. Against the main character of the story
2. Against the nature
3. Against the society
4. Against himself (emotion, feeling, illness)

Theme:
 The theme is the central idea or belief in a short story.

Use of symbols:
Symbolism is a literary technique that adds meaning to a short story
by using an event or object as a symbol to represent something else.
A symbol can be an object, picture, written words, sound, numerals,
and language.
For example:
The tell-tale heart by Edger Alan Poe

The eyes
There are many symbolic interpretation of the old man eye.

1. The eye represents the ‘I’ that is the essence of the old man.
2. The eye holds mysterious power, according to the narrator, and may
symbolize the inability of the narrator to hide his secret sins.
3. The old man eye is pale blue, with the film over it, indicating a lock of
visual clarity and reliability. in this sense the symbolize the narrator in
so much as all information we receive come through his distorted
mind , much in a same way everything that old man sees is filtered
through his distorted eye.

The heart
The beast is actual symbolize the emotional center of the individual.it
symbolize the narrator’s guilt. He hears the heart twice after killing the old
man.

The old man’s bedroom

 Speaking of violating some the narrator describe it as, when in had
made an opening sufficient from my head I trust in my head .oh you would
have learned to see how cunningly I trust it in! Moved it slowly very slowly.

The house
By trying to hide the body of the murdered old man beneath the
floorboard, the narrator is symbolically trying to hide the guilt of his crime in
his subconscious.  The police can be seen as the voice of conscience, and
even though they never speak in the story the narrator's own guilt reveals
itself.
