How to Use a Drill Press


A drill press is a machine made for drilling holes, deburring holes, reaming, and
tapping holes straight, easily, quickly, and precisely. Follow these steps to learn
how to use a drill press properly.

Tools and materials required:

 Drill press
 Drill chuck and chuck key
 Drill
 Vise or clamps
 Outlet for power
 Part to drill
 Oil
sharp, hot, and fast moving components while
operating could cuase serious injury or death. Keep a safe distance from moving
parts.

1. Plug drill press into outlet for power


2. Get a feel for the different components of the drill press
3. Put drill chuck into the spindle

4. Pick your drill for the operation


5. Put your drill in the drill chuck and tighten with chuck key
6. Position the table in proper spot for the job
7. Align the center of your hole location with the center of the drill
8. Clamp down part tightly
9. Add oil to drill as lubricant
10. Turn drill press on
11. Adjust to proper cutting speed
12. Lower spindle down to the part
13. Drill into part slowly and steadily
14. Bring up the spindle after hole is drilled
15. Turn off drill press
16. Unclamp and clean part
17. Clean the drill press and any tools used

This machine is very commonly used in almost all machine shops for many
different hole making operations. Make sure to fully understand how to use it
to be efficient when having to do operations involving drilling, deburring,
tapping, and reaming.
