Orbx FTX EU EGHP Popham Airport Version 1.0 User Guide – April 2013 2
Thank You!
The Orbx team would firstly like to thank you for purchasing FTX EU EGHP POPHAM Airport Version 1.0

EGHP Popham, located near Basingstoke, Hampshire and is developed for FTX England. We have tried to
capture both the history and natural beauty of the airport and surrounding area. Almost every single object
seen in the real airport has been accurately modeled and positioned, allowing you to immerse yourself in a
realistic flight simulation environment.

Airport Operations
Popham Airfield is an unlicensed airfield located 6 NM south west of Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK. It lies
alongside the A303 road.
The airfield has two grass runways, designated 08/26 and 03/21. The latter has restricted operational dates.
Light aircraft maintenance facilities, aircraft hire and training on microlight aircraft are available.

EGHP Specific Tuning Notes

1. Set AUTOGEN to NORMAL for best performance

This airport is situated in the Orbx FTX EU ENG region within the FTX EUROPE region. Even without EGHP
installed, it is very demanding on computers, not dissimilar to FTX performance in London or Manchester. We
generally recommend that you begin your exploration of this airport with Autogen set to NORMAL. Of course,
you may find that you get acceptable performance at this setting, so perhaps you may be able to increase this
to Dense or higher.

Orbx FTX EU ENG is required for full functionality
This airport scenery addon is designed to work with Microsoft Flight Simulator X /Lockheed Martin Prepar3D
and Orbx FTX EU ENG.

Here's what is required to run this airport scenery as Orbx designed it to:

PRODUCT Version(s) Why

Microsoft Flight Simulator X (FSX) The base product required.

All Orbx products are made for

• Standard Edition
FSX/P3D and don't run by
• Deluxe Edition
themselves.
• Acceleration Addon Pack (not a stand-alone product)
• Gold Edition (which includes all three versions above)

If you don't have FSX already, the best version to

purchase would be the Gold Edition, which already

Manual Scenery Library Configuration
If you do NOT have Orbx FTX installed you can still use this scenery by manually adding the scenery library
entry from within Flight Simulator X/Prepar3D.

Here's the steps required to configure the scenery library.

1. Run Flight Simulator X/Prepar3D, then selecting Settings | Scenery Library

2. Click on the Add Area button

3. A folder browser window will pop up.

4. Navigate to the ORBX \ FTX_EU folder

5. Now select the FTX_AA_EGHP folder and click OK

6. You will then see two folders displayed, Scenery and Texture. Now click OK*

*(Note: If you're using Windows 7, click anywhere in the white portion of the folder browser screen that shows
the Scenery and Texture folder, not the OK button - there's a bug with FSX/P3D under Windows 7)

7. You will now be taken back to the Scenery Library list of scenery added, and the airport will now be
displayed at the top of the list.

You can now load up a flight at the airport using the "Free Flight" menu.

The EGHP Control Panel
After EGHP is installed, a Control Panel icon is placed onto your Windows desktop. You can also use FTX
Central to access the EGHP Control Panel from the main FTX Central interface.

The Control Panel will enable you to disable or enable certain scenery features of the airport to allow it to
perform in accordance with the PC you have.

To disable or enable any feature, simply click the tick box. Any changes are made instantly and there is no
‘Apply’ button required.

The FTX Aero Tool (Optional Section)

When you first install the EGHP Popham Airport scenery, the installer will automatically add a Windows
desktop shortcut to FTX Aero for you. There is also a shortcut in the Start Menu under the Orbx program
group. When you launch the Aero tool, its interface looks similar to this:

It’s very simple to use. FTX Aero replaces three global FSX/P3D textures when you apply the choices from its
interface. These are:

• Detail Bump Map – This is an overlay texture which is designed to add “noise” and remove
smoothness from ground textures. FSX/P3D comes with its own detail1.bmp file which is very generic
and does not really enhance airport ground environments. The FTX Aero version creates three
different styles of bump mapping for asphalt or concrete surfaces. For EGHP we recommend
'Cracked'.

Orbx FTX EU EGHP Popham Airport Version 1.0 User Guide – April 2013 8
• Runway 18 Texture – Orbx GA airfields will generally have runway18.dds encoded in their APX files.
This is a runway used predominately in European smaller airports. The FTX Aero version has much
better detail than the FSX/P3D default. You can choose from 1024x1024 or 2048x2048 resolution.
Note that this setting has no impact at EGHP since we provide photoreal poly runways

• Taxiway Markings – Again, Aero will provide two variants, the first being a yellow faded line suitable
for asphalt, the second being a yellow/black line suited to concrete. Again, this is more a feature for
Orbx (and any other) airport which uses the APX file to lay down taxiway lines. Our EGHP scenery does
not do this, since the 7cm resolution of the aprons are sufficiently detailed to provide clear taxiway
lines.

Just make your choice and the texture appearance will be shown in the preview window. FTX Aero will
automatically make a backup of whatever textures you currently have installed. You can go back to your
default installed texture at any time by just selecting ‘Your Default’ as the choice.

TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD Settings in FSX/P3D.CFG

FTX Aero is quite clever in that it will automatically set your TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD= (TML) parameter in
FSX/P3D.CFG for you to allow the higher resolution 2048x2048 runway18.dds to be properly seen.
Additionally, if you prefer to use a TML of 1024, 2048 or 4096 (for addons like REX or a HD aircraft repaint),
simply select the TML menu option where you can choose to lock your TML setting to one of those values.

Alternatively, you can also choose to have Aero revert back to a TML of 1024 whenever you’re not using a
higher resolution texture. In this instance, FTX Aero is a handy tool to quickly set your TML level regardless.

Orbx FTX EU EGHP Popham Airport Version 1.0 User Guide – April 2013 9
If you have not chosen any Aero Detail Bump Map textures, and do not have Land Detail Textures enabled in
the FSX/P3D settings menu, this is what the airside apron detail looks like: (this image is not taken from Popham
airport, This is a generic image.)

Now enable Land Detail textures in the FSX/P3D settings menu, under the Scenery tab, as follows:

Here is how the aprons appear with the FSX/P3D scenery Land detail textures setting enabled, and with the
Cracked detail bump map selected in Aero: (this image is not taken from Popham airport, This is a generic image.)

Notice how much more defined it appears?

We strong recommend that Land Detail Textures are enabled, the "Cracked" or "Coarse" options in Aero
produces the best results by far.

Popham Airfield Official Operating Procedures

Noise !!! Our neighbours are very noise sensitive so all pilots are requested to be considerate. There
is habitation very close to each end of all the runways and also some farms in the middle of the
circuit. Even to the north in the relatively free airspace there are more stud farms and the like, so
care is required. Do not fly over the villages of Micheldever, Micheldever Station (SW), Popham (SE),
Overton (N), or North Waltham (E).

Additional General Notes

Firstly, remember Popham radio frequency 129.80 is just that…an Air-to-Ground radio with a volunteer
manning it! Radio operating hours are from 08:00 until 17:00 in the summer and 08:30 until 16:30 in the
winter (1st October - 1st April). Flying is allowed (with prior permission) in the summer up until 20:00
(n.b. this is a planning deadline!) or sunset in the winter. After 17:00 other traffic may often pass you
advisory arrival information. If you intend to arrive when we are closed, we request that you advise us at a
suitable earlier time and leave a landing fee (with your registration) in an envelope which can be posted
through the Clubhouse door opposite the toilet block.

Remember there is a signals square just next to the club house but this may not have been changed if we
have gone home so check the windsocks as well!

Runway 08/26 is the usual choice. Runway 03/21 is on farm land, is strictly NOT part of Popham, and
therefore subject to the 28-day "change of use" planning rule (n.b. ONE movement = 1 of the 28 days!)

Circuits are all to the north at 800ft QFE, with 08/26 having offset approaches (see later).

There can be extensive microlight traffic which tends to fly a tight inner circuit as well as the usual
mixture of other flying machines flying the published circuit to stay north of a couple of noise sensitive
farms.

Overhead joins should generally be used though it is common practice to use a dead side join over the
woods when using 08/26 and approaching from the south. N.B. On fly-in days we get VERY BUSY. If the
wind is favourable you can expect be given an overhead join only and to find both runways in use at
the same time, one for landing and one for departure to ease ground congestion. On these occasions
the signal square "T" will always display the landing runway and there will be a white ball above the "T" if
both runways are in use.

Recommended FSX/P3D Slider Settings
Firstly, like default FSX/P3D, dragging all your sliders to the right even with today’s modern hardware, will for
most people result in very poor visuals and performance. We suggest that you begin your exploration of
EGHP using the slider settings shown below, and then if you find performance to be acceptable, you can move
certain sliders to the right, although we recommend you only move one slider at a time to gauge the effect.

The most critical slider in FSX/P3D is the Autogen Density slider. With the way EGHP has been designed, it
has the single most critical performance effect in the simulator. We'll discuss the best settings for this slider
later.

So before you begin your first flight, please change your FSX/P3D sliders to what is shown on the following
pages. You may think the settings are too low at first, but we're calling these the BASE SETTINGS which is the
recommended settings for medium spec PCs.

The following setup screenshots are from FSX, but can be used as a reference for P3D.

Orbx FTX EU EGHP Popham Airport Version 1.0 User Guide – April 2013 15
* Please refer to the Autogen Density Table further in this user guide for specific information about this slider

The Autogen Density Slider
Because FTX uses much denser, more accurately placed autogen objects in its annotation, having it set to
Extremely Dense in large cities like London or Manchester will bring even the most powerful PC to its knees.
We won't mince our words - FTX is not designed to give you a 60FPS experience with all sliders maxed.

The key thing to remember is that EGHP is designed to be used both today and in the future, meaning that
we did not cripple the product on release to cater for a broad range of PCs, but rather created a standard
which will be enjoyed by most people as hardware catches up.

Here's a simple table which should be used as a guide for the Autogen Density slider. This has been indexed
to PCs as at January 2011, which means this table will become dated rather quickly. We expect the 'Extreme'
spec PC to be the Entry Level by mid 2012, so of course as FSX/P3D gets older, your PCs are likely to get
faster.

That said, if you adhere to these slider settings in EGHP you will get a good balance between visuals and
performance. Always begin your first EGHP flight with Autogen set to Normal.
