The Ministry of Agriculture and Forests is pleased to bring out the Bhutan RNR
Statistics 2018 which is the 6th edition of a series of such publications since year
2000. The publication is a compendium of the relevant statistics in the domain of
Renewable Natural Resources collected by Renewable Natural Resources Statistics
Division (RSD) and various agencies within and outside the MoAF. The data
presented are harmonised and validated by the RSD and the RNR Statistics
Technical Working Group (RS-TWG) of the MoAF. As data are compiled from
various sources, each statistical table is provided with the information sources so that
data contributors are duly acknowledged and users can contact the source for further
information.
The statistical tables are presented under various chapters: production, trade,
population, land use, etc.. The structure is organized in line with the
recommendation of FAO, such that data are comparable at national, regional and
international level. The publication is also available at
http://www.moaf.gov.bt/category/rsd,
I would like to extend my appreciation to RSD, RS-TWG and all the data
contributors (departments/agencies including Dzongkhag and Gewog RNR sectors)
for extending support and co-operation in bringing this publication on time. The
publication is the official source for data and information on RNR sector.

Chapter 2: Trade
This chapter presents the year wise statistical tables on import and export of
RNR commodities for the years 2014 to 2018, as per the Bhutan Trade
Statistics of Department of Revenue and Customs (DRC), Ministry of
Finance. Import of farm machineries are presented separately under the
machinery chapter.
The data on trade are useful for calculating trade balance, food balance sheet,
food security and many other indicators. It can also yield useful information
with regard to trends in people’s consumption patterns, the country’s
production capacity and pointers for policy makers in relation to investment
in agriculture and related industries.

This chapter presents statistics on population and labour derived from the
series of Annual Labour Force Surveys conducted by the Department of
Employment and Human Resources, MoLHR. The statistics for 2017 and
2018 are derived from the Population and Housing Census of Bhutan 2017
(PHCB, 2017), 2018 Labour Force Survey Report, Population Projections of
Bhutan 2017-2047 conducted by the National Statistical Bureau.

Land is one of the most important elements in agriculture and hence statistics
on land and its use is of special interest to users. Detailed statistics on land
cover and use was first published by the Ministry of Agriculture in 1997
(LUPP, 1994). According to LUPP (1994), the total agricultural land then
was calculated as 784,565.86 acres. In 2010, the ministry conducted a more
supposedly accurate assessment and an updated statistics and maps on land
cover and use was published (LCMP, 2010). According to LCMP 2010, the
total agricultural land was calculated as only 277,998.5 acres, which as a
percentage comes to 2. 9% ofthe totalcountry’s landarea.
The latest available information on land cover is the Land Use and Land
Cover 2016, published by the Department of Forests and Park Services in
2017 and the information and figures in this chapter is presented from LULC
2016. Further, information and figures from LCMP, 2010 is presented to give
a sense of comparision between different land cover figures. Statistics on
different government land programs such as land leasing, land
substitution/exchange and private individuals’ land conversion, mainly from
wetland to dryland category, are also presented.

The construction of irrigation canals and farm roads are executed by AED of
DoA and the Dzongkhags administrations. Hence, compilation of statistics
on these infrastructures is quite challenging. Electric fencing is another
important RNR infrastructure that is executed by several bodies such as
NPPC under DoA, various functionaries under DoFPS, projects and even by
some NGOs. Private individuals put electric fencing around their fields to
protect from wild predation.
Further, statisics on sales outlets, farmshops, poly houses are also presented
in this chapter. The operation of sales outlets and farm shops are carried out
by the DAMC and FCBL.

Further, the chapter also presents price of the various agricultural inputs
such as seeds and seedlings, pasture seeds and seedlings, plant protection
chemicals, fertilizers and farm machineries distributed by different
agencies.
The data are compiled from the administrative records maintained by the
various Territorial Forest Divisions, National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary
offices. The requirement for private consumers are supposedly to be
catered by the sawmillers while NRDCL is expected to service the timber
demand for dzong construction, lhakhang construction, special projects
and other government construction works such as hospital and schools. In
addition, NRDCL also extracts and sells sand and boulders from the
designated river banks and quarry sites.
There are currently ten protected areas which includes five national parks,
four wildlife sanctuaries and one strict nature reserve. The total areas under
protected area management are 42.71 percent while 8.61 percent is under
biological corridors, which links all the protected areas. The country has
51.44 percent of it’s total area under conservation including other
conservation areas.
