Bharatpur city
K eoladeo National Park is situated in the flood plains of Bharatpur, near the present city of
Bharatpur, and is a large, shallow saucer like depression, extending up to 29 sq. km.
The area was developed into a duck shooting reserve in 1899 by Prince Harbhanji of Morvi State in
Gujarat, when he was appointed Administrator of Bharatpur. Inspired by the duck shoot reserves that
the prince had experienced in England, he got bandhs and dykes constructed (between 1850 and
1899) that increased the water-holding capacity of the depression.
The Maharaja handed over Ghana to the Government of Rajasthan which, on the advice of the
National Committee for Bird Preservation, India, notified it as a Bird Sanctuary in 1956. In the year
1981 Keoladeo was declared as a National Park and in 1985 the park was declared as a World
Heritage Site by UNESCO under the World Heritage Site Convention.
Abrar Khan
This Reserve, locally known as Ghana, is a mosaic of grasslands, woodlands, woodland swamps and
wetlands. These diverse habitats are home to 375 avian species including 140 species of waterfowl,
372 species of plants, 34 species of mammals, 57 species of fish, 14 species of snakes, 5 species of
lizards, 3 species of Geckos, 7 species of turtles, 8 species of amphibians, 71 species of butterflies and
a variety of other lower life forms.
Keoladeo National Park is popularly known as a 'bird paradise'. 374 bird species have been recorded
in the park. Keoladeo National Park is a staging ground for migratory waterfowl arriving in the Indian
subcontinent along the Central Asian flyway before dispersing to various regions. It has one of the
world's most spectacular heronries. It hosts 15 species of birds in huge numbers. Keoladeo National
Park used to be the only wintering site in India for the central population of the rare and endangered
Siberian Cranes till 2002. Common migratory ducks in the park are Pintail, Common teal, Shoveller,
Gadwall, Graylag and Barheaded geese, Wigeon and Common pochard. Marbled and Baikal teals are
threatened species and are rarely sighted. Falcated teal, Baer's pochard, Common shelduck, Scaup
duck and White fronted goose are also rarely sighted. 42 species of raptors and 9 species of owls are
found in the park.
