Comparative Adjectives

Time:
• 40 minutes

Overview:
This freebie activity reinforces the use of comparative adjectives. It helps students remember the difference
between ER/MORE and EST/MOST and how to use them correctly. It is also a great activity to help students
practice ordering items.

Activity (CCSS: L.1, grades 3, 4, 5)

1. Display the Review Notes (p. 2) on a Smartboard or in a way that all students can see. Review with your
class the rules for using ER and EST to compare items. You may also want to copy the Review Notes and
give each student a handout. Depending on the background knowledge of your students, you may need
to reteach comparative adjectives or just remind students about the rules.
2. Copy a class set of the Comparative Adjectives handout and distribute (p. 3). Review the directions and
the example. Have students complete the practice page individually, in pairs, or whole group. Teacher
notes provided (p. 4).

Extension Idea
1. Have students copy one comparative sentence on a 4x6 notecard and add illustrations. Display the
notecards in the classroom.

Review Notes

Let’s Compare with Adjectives

• Use adjectives to compare.

• Add ER to the end of an adjective when comparing two items.

• Add EST to the end of an adjective when comparing three or more items.

• Use the words more and most to compare long adjectives (multiple

syllables).

• Use MORE when comparing two items.

• Use MOST when comparing three or more items.

• Never add ER and MORE or EST and MOST to the same adjective (more

smarter or most smartest)
