A Proposed Alcohol Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Center

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background and Nature of the Project

Alcohol is widely consumed in the Philippines. One reason for this may be
that the Spanish colonizers not only brought with them the Roman Catholic
religion but also their drinking culture. There is a generally positive view of
alcohol among most Filipinos, but there are growing concerns about the impact
drinking is having on society. As the islands become more urbanized there
appears to be a growing reliance on alcohol to help people deal with stress.
In the past, drinking alcohol was predominately a male pursuit but things
have change in recent years. The Filipinos seem to be adopting a more western
approach to alcohol and so are developing all the problems associated with
this. There are no available statistics on the full extent of the alcohol problem
in the Philippines, but there is little doubt that it is a real problem. Public
drunkenness can be occasionally witnessed and alcohol problems do cause
havoc in some homes and communities. According to St. Luke’s Medical
Center (2015) , Filipinos are the second highest consumers of alcohol in South
East Asia (the Indonesians are first), and the number one wine drinkers. It is
estimated that 5 million Filipinos drink on a fairly regularly basis – it is
believed that 39.9% of the population drink on an irregular basis. A relatively
small number of people will seek medical help for alcohol problems, but this is
likely due to the fact that most do not view it as a medical matter even when
their health has deteriorated as a result of the abuse.
Alcohol abuse is a problem in the Philippines – it also seems to be on the
increase. Most worrying of all is that chronic alcoholics often fail to seek help
for their problems, and this means that they end up with incurable conditions
such as liver cirrhosis. Many Filipinos who become addicted to alcohol are
resistant to any type of intervention.
Alcohol rehabilitation can be helpful for the management of drinking
problems. There are a number of private rehabs in the Philippines but a
growing number of Filipinos are looking abroad for help due to lack of
facilities and overcrowding.
1.2 Objective of the Study

The goal of this proposal is develop a research to be used for the design of
an Alcohol Rehabilitation Center that will provide the needs for Alcohol
dependents, aiming in their recovery and giving them proper medical
treatments base on their alcoholic cases for them to be able to recover and be on
track and start to live normally without depending on alcohol.
The study aims to provide a rehabilitation facility that will create
opportunities for the people to live and work in a healthy environment and
space; it will provide job opportunities to people and as well as give chances
for alcohol abused users to regain their self back.

1.3 Significance of the Study

The significance of this study will redound in solving alcohol related

problems in the society. The study will incorporate existing knowledge about
alcohol addictions and how will it be solved. This study can serve as an
additional supplement for future development plans regarding alcoholism. The
study will open opportunities for alcohol dependents to regain their self-esteem
and start a new.

1.4 Statement of the Problem

With the increase of alcohol dependent people who need rehabilitation,

some of the rehabilitation centers are forced to admit patients exceeding their
intended number of bed capacity and overcrowding the center leading to an
unhealthy environment for its users and affecting their treatment process. Thus,
the proposed project is a response for the lack of treatment facilities, it will
focus on the better health services through state-of-the-art facilities providing
health treatment and social reintegration to its users.
1.5 Scope of Limitations

This study will focus on developing a Rehabilitation and Reintegration Center that
is specialized in alcohol dependent users. The reintegration center includes the
rehabilitation and treatments of patients. The research will limit to the medical and
treatment needs on an alcoholic abused person.
