THE EFFECT OF STEREOTYPING IN WORKPLACE

INTRODUCTION
- The definition of stereotyping is making an assumptions about people according to
their gender, culture or races.
- stereotypes can be positive , negative and neutral - almost wrong and often serve to
make us feel slighlty superior .
-stereotypes natural function of the human mind
-effect on stereotypes give impact to the employee and affect productivity of the
employee at the workplace

BODY 1
- impact on the employee mostly on women - leads to wage discrimination
-in research of US Department of Labor(2005) - the average of wage of women is
only 81% of men’s wages.
-one of the reason why women are given the lowest wage is because they are paid
based on the gender stereotyping.
-according to research by the Tilburg Institute for Behavioral Economics in the
Netherlands - women who are married judged being more traditionally feminine, less
intelligent, and less ambitious - were given lower pay rate and seen as more
dependent.
-besides the wage, women also do not always get promoted into the higher position
because of the stereotype that women are not strong - growing enough or they are not
as good at solving problems.
-this kind of stereotypes should have not happen at the workplace because not matter
wherever you came from, what races or culture you have or what gender are you,
everyone should have an equal opportunities and treatment.

BODY 2
- could affect the productivity of the employee - negative stereotypes - hurt the self
esteem of the employee
-unable to do their job well because they facing all the negative stereotypes - unable
to focus - lose confident
-to live up the expectations, they might feel pressure and could lead to anxiety
-stereotype threat can cause people to perform less well than they are capable of
performing (Inzlicht & Schmader 2012, Walton & Spencer 2009).
-but there some people according the princeton researchers they discovered that
people may adjust their behavior to break stereotypes about themselves or match the
stereotypes of others, even if it means playing dumb or giving the cold shoulder.

CONCLUSION
- in a conclusion, stereotyping at the workplace could affect and give impact to the
employee and limiting the relationships between the co-workers.
- don’t judge the book by its cover
