DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS: A PUBLIC COMMENTARY

A commentary is a comment on a newly published article. A commentary may be invited by the chief
editor or spontaneously submitted. The goal of publishing commentaries is to advance the research
field by providing a forum for varying perspectives on a certain topic under consideration in the
journal. The author of a commentary probably has in-depth knowledge of the topic and is eager to
present a new and/or unique viewpoint on existing problems, fundamental concepts, or prevalent
notions, or wants to discuss the implications of a newly implemented innovation. A commentary may
also draw attention to current advances and speculate on future directions of a certain topic and may
include original data as well as state a personal opinion. While a commentary may be critical of an
article published in the journal, it is important to maintain a respectful tone that is critical of ideas or
conclusions but not of authors.

In summary, a commentary may be:

A. A critical challenge to one or more aspects of the focal article, arguing for a position other
than that taken in the focal article.
B. An elaboration or extension of the position taken in the focal article, basically sympathetic to
the position taken in the focal article but pushing the argument further.
C. An application of a theoretical or methodological perspective that sheds light on the issues
addressed in the focal article.
D. A reflection on the writer's experiences in applying the issues addressed in the focal article,
in particular health and well-being settings.
E. A comment on the applicability of the issues raised in the focal article to other settings, or to
other cultures.

HOW TO WRITE A COMMENTARY:

Commentaries in International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being should not

exceed 10 manuscript pages. A tightly argued four- to six-page commentary is likely to be better
received than a meandering 10-page ditto. Use these simple guidelines:
 Do not summarize the focal article; just give the reference. Assume the reader has just read it.
Move directly to identifying the key issues you want to raise.
 Do not include general praise for the focal article.
 Use only essential citations. For commentary purposes, cite only works absolutely essential to
support your point.
 Use a short title that emphasizes your key message. (It should be clear in context that all
commentaries are a reaction to a particular paper).
 Do not include an abstract.
 Make clear your take-home message.
 Make sure there is full author information (name, affiliation, address, phone, email) for all
authors. Authors must be individuals.

WRITTEN PRODUCTION

Make a public commentary using 400 to 600 words. You need to select one of the news that
is indicated below.

Option A: Why America has the world’s most confirmed COVID-19 cases

Option B: The coronavirus pandemic began in China. Today, it reported no new local
infections for the first time

Option a
United States: the new focus of Covid-19 pandemic

I would like to comment on the news published by CNN in which they talk about how the
coronavirus is affecting the United States. “Why America has the world's most confirmed Covid-
19 cases”.

The first point I would like to touch is the disastrous decision made by, The U.S President,
Donald Trump when he prioritized economic development rather than public health ,believing
that this new virus will not be harmful in America, based on the low number of infected that his
government used to have and clearly ignored, Nowadays this “low” number has increased to
more than 82 000 people, turning into the country with most official cases of COVID-19
overtaking Italy and China.

Right now, the situation is very different, this virus has spread all over the country, registering
15 000 new infected the last Thursday and 1195 dead since the virus arrive the country, the
problem started when the government underestimate this disease by imposing a quarantine,
that was not as strict as in other countries because they allow you to practice sports, take a
walk or practically continue your life, trusting that they will be more concern about the problem,
but this measures were not enough to stop the spreading of the virus and now the country has
enter in state of emergency.

Even though, the government is now putting all their sources in trying to stop the virus, it is very
late to identify the persons that has it and isolate them because the number of infected it is now
to massive that the government should expect the worse and focus in preparing and supplying
their hospitals because if the number of infected per day keeps the same rhythm or increase,
the public health system will go into crisis.

There is no doubt that the number of deaths is proportional to the number of infected that is why
fear in the society is manifesting. – and nothing farther from reality because 81 000 deaths are
expected by July according to a detailed analysis from the institute for Health Metrics and
evaluations of Washington University analysis that over time will see its veracity.

Despite of the information previously provided, Donald Trump seems to be more worried on
saving the economy but in this moment what the US citizens need is fast and radical decisions
that could affect their daily life but that are necessary if they are planning to stop this pandemic,
blaming Trump is not more important they need that people with an important position as
Mayors, senators and governors encourage their own ruled area to follow the given instructions
such as isolation and good hygiene, is in people´s hand to stop the pandemic.
