Law College Dehradun has splendidly contributed to legal education in the country since its
inception and inauguration by His Excellency Shri Surjeet Singh Barnala, the then Governor of
Uttarakhand in 2002. It has set a paradigm for legal education in the nation by offering innovative,
research driven discourses that are aimed at striking a balance between legal theory and practice.
With scholarly and experience-rich faculty, the college commands an enviable position of being in
the league of topmost Law Schools of the country.

The college has earned many laurels to its credit, it has pioneered the 5-years BA.LL.B. integrated
undergraduate course in the northern region of India, it is the first independent Law College and
also the first to introduce the one-year LL.M. degree course in the state of Uttarakhand. Law College
Dehradun as a traditional legal institution has an illustrious history replete of a plethora of
examples of its alumni achieving the pinnacle of success in the legal frontiers as judges, professors,
and advocates. The excellent academic record of our students speaks volumes about the value and
quality of education that is imparted here with great labour and care. The college continues
perpetually to contribute to its glorious history with state-of the-art infrastructure and innovative
and creative teaching methodologies to ensure that the products of this college stand out as beacons
of knowledge in the society and paragons of Justice.

Established on 1st August 2002 and affiliated with H.N.B. Garhwal Central University, Law College
Dehradun is elevated to Faculty of Uttaranchal University with effect from academic session 201213
with passing of Uttaranchal University Act, 2012 (Act No. 11 of 2013).

A Webinar with Mr. Sameer Shah, Arbitrator at Court of Arbitration for Art, on topic “International
Commercial Arbitration or Mediation: The Choice Question”, is being organized by Law College Dehradun,
Faculty of Uttaranchal University, Uttarakhand.

The maxim “Ubi jus ibi remedium” (meaning where there is a right there is a remedy) rightly laid down the
foundation of legal system in every human society. The legal pattern of resolving disputes in court of law has
resulted in abundance of pending cases which rightly justifies the cliché “justice delayed is justice denied”.
Resolving disputes amicably is sine qua non for growth and maintaining peace and harmony in society.

The webinar will enlighten with the scope and various other aspects of International Commercial Arbitration and
Mediation. International Commercial Arbitration is an alternative method of resolving disputes between private
parties arising out of commercial transactions conducted across national boundaries that allows the parties to
avoid litigation in national courts. The present trend all over the world is the redressal of commercial disputes
through arbitration and not litigation. The attitude of legal fraternity including the lawyers, judges and arbitrators
is changing towards preference for arbitration process instead of resorting to litigation in a law court. With the
globalization and liberalization of trade and commerce, the importance of Alternate Dispute Resolution for settling
of international disputes has assumed greater significance.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Mr. Sameer Shah, Advocate, is a well-known International

Arbitrator with over 2 decades of practice and a renowned name in
the Arbitration field. He started his practice in 1994. In 2003, he
established his own proprietary law firm in Ahmedabad by the
name “S.U. SHAH & ASSOCIATES”. He is the Arbitrator at Court of
Arbitration for Art and also the Senior Partner at Trust Legal
Advocates & Consultants. In 2009 he was appointed as the
Chairman of International Dispute Resolution & Risk Management
Institute [Indian Branch]. He also holds the office as the Director of
Hong Kong Zhiqing Trading Co. Ltd. And at present, he is the
Director of Charted Institute of Arbitrators [Indian Branch]. He is
the Senior Partner, Trust Legal Advocates & Consultants and also an Associate Member of Brooke
Chambers. He also is the Member of Advisory Board of Enhelion Knowledge Ventures Pvt. Ltd.
and is the Council Member of Alliance for Equality in Dispute Resolution. He also has the
fellowship of World Mediation Organization and is an International Accredited Professional
Mediator. Mr. Shah has also been associated as mentor with different teams representing in
William C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot and other Arbitration Moots.
