2. Safety

2.1 Safety

SOCO SYSTEM products conform to all relevant EC directives on safety and health
and are constructed with reference to EC harmonised standards.

Some products require further safety guarding before being put into operation. This
appears from the EC declaration of components.

Local authorities can make demands on the arrangement of a working place. This
does not encompass this delivery.

Before starting the machine, make sure that there are no items within the working
area and a possible guarding of the machine as this can prevent the machine from
operating in standard mode.

2.2 Emergency stop

The emergency stop may only be used when the operation is to be stopped due to, e.g., a torn carton,
incorrect carton folding, etc.
■ Push the emergency stop or open the side door. All movements are stopped, and the machine is
vented.

■ The carton can be removed by pushing STOP/RESET( ) for approximately 5 seconds.

Restart after emergency stop:
■ Pull out the emergency stop and close the side door.

■ Push AIR ON ( ).

■ Push START ( ).

3.3 Application and function

BE-2200/-2300 AHS is a fully automatic carton erector for erecting and bottom sealing of folding cartons.
The capacity of the carton erector depends on the design and quality of the carton.

BE-2200/-2300 AHS has a compact design and is easy to adjust for varying carton sizes without
9785140011_Carton erector AHS_GB_Version 5_2011.11.11

replacement of mechanical components. The adjustment is carried out by means of a crank and
counters. The machine is available in right and left hand versions.

The carton blanks are placed in the carton erector’s carton blank magazine. The cartons are taken from
the magazine one at a time, erected, and held by a vacuum head. After automatic bottom flap folding
and bottom sealing, the carton is led out of the carton erector by means of the two side drives. The carton
is now ready for manual packaging or top sealing in a carton sealer. Then the carton is placed on a pallet,
as shown in the following examples.

5. Operation

5.1 Format adjustment

To make a format adjustment of the carton erector, it must be connected correctly to the mains and the
compressed air mains. Furthermore, all cylinders must be in their initial positions + or -.

Before carrying out the format adjustment, the two reference points of the machine must be observed.

■ 1) Measure the vertical reference point at the fixed

side guide in the magazine at the outfeed side from
the bottom of the carton to the floor.

■ 2) The horizontal reference point, the flap tucker, must

correspond to the bottom of the erected carton - seen
from the bottom of the carton.

The machine is equipped with a crank and counters for quick and easy change between different carton
formats. The proportion of all counters to the axes is 1:1 so that if a counter shows 100.0, it corresponds
to 100 mm.
9785140011_Carton erector AHS_GB_Version 5_2011.11.11

The counters are numbered 1-8 and have the following functions:
1. Width adjustment of side drives and centering of tape dispenser.
2. Height adjustment of top guide. Adjustment of top plate.
3. Height adjustment of carton blank magazine - use the ruler.
4. Width adjustment of carton blank magazine.
5. Width adjustment of flap tucker = half the width of the erected carton.
6. Length adjustment of carriage = total length of the carton.
7. Width adjustment of pressure unit.
8. Length adjustment of pressure unit.

See the included list of the machine settings.

Glueing

■ Make sure that the adhesive reservoir is switched on and wait for it, for the glue hose, and the
glue gun to have the right temperature. The text in the control cabinet reads READY.
■ Push STOP on the control cabinet. The gluing process has stopped. Format setting of the
machine or a test run without glue application can now be carried out.
■ Measure the height of the bottom flap. Set the flap height by means of the crank on the hydraulic
pump (3) on the long side of the carton blank magazine. Read the height on the ruler.
■ Place the adjustable side guide (4) so that it is easy to place a carton blank in the carton blank
magazine. Place a carton blank against the fixed side, and adjust the adjustable side guide to a
distance of 3-5 mm between the carton blank and the side guide. The slot on the carton blank
must be centred against the retention unit, approximately 10-40 mm down the carton blank.
9785140011_Carton erector AHS_GB_Version 5_2011.11.11

■ Rough adjust the top guide by means of crank and counters (2) so that the carton blanks can
easily be picked up. The tape dispenser follows it automatically.
■ Adjust the side drives. Measure the width of the carton. Adjust the side drives by means of crank
and counters (1). The tape dispenser automatically follows.
■ Measure the length of the erected carton. Adjust the carriage by means of crank and counters (6).
■ Adjust the outer flap tucker. Measure the width of the carton, and adjust the flap tucker by means
of crank and counters (5).
See the included lists of the counter and glue settings of the machine (placed in the control cabinet).

Tel.: +45 43 52 55 66 Fax: +45 43 52 81 16 info@socosystem.com www.socosystem.com

12
On delivery, the length of the glue lines are preprogrammed corresponding to the sample cartons sent.
If new lengths of the glue lines are required, or if new carton formats are added, check the instruction
manual of the glue unit manufacturer for further information.

Please note that the glue gun maintains its working temperature and is very
hot.

5.2 Start

To check that the machine is adjusted correctly, all processes can be carried out separately by pushing
START ( ) - STOP/RESET ( ) until the carton is between the side drives and then
glued. In this way, all settings can be checked and fine adjusted, if necessary.

■ Push START( ).

■ Push STOP/RESET ( ) just after the suction plate has sucked up the carton. The
suction plate is now in its inner position.
■ Push the emergency stop. The entire machine is vented, except the suction plate.

■ The suction plate must be vented, and STOP/RESET ( ) must be pushed for
approximately 5 seconds before the carton is led onwards.
■ Open the side door and fold the supporting flap manually. Make sure that the carton is levelled up.
If necessary, fine adjust the carriage.
■ Manually fold the bottom flaps, first the inner flaps and then the 2 outer flaps. Check the position
of the carton bottom. If necessary, raise or lower the magazine.
■ Make sure that the carton can easily pass above the glue gun.
■ Check the top guide. Adjust it so that it rests lightly on the carton.
■ Then pull out the emergency stop, and check that all doors are closed.

■ Push AIR ON ( ).

■ Push START( ) and then STOP/RESET ( ) immediately after this. The side
drives start.
■ Place the test carton in position in front of the side drives. Adjust the side drives so that they lead
the carton through the machine. Check that the carton is glued correctly at bottom, and adjust, if
necessary.
■ Fill approximately 25 cartons in the magazine and make a test run with the machine. Fine adjust,
if necessary.
9785140011_Carton erector AHS_GB_Version 5_2011.11.11

Now the machine is adjusted to the current carton format and ready to operate in automatic mode.

5.3 Automatic operation

■ Switch on power on the front of the control cabinet.

■ Check that the adhesive reservoir is switched on and wait for it, for the glue hose, and the glue
gun to have the right temperature. The text in the control cabinet reads READY.

13
■ Check that the emergency stop has been pulled out and all doors in the guarding are closed.

■ Push AIR ON ( ).

■ Push START ( ), which will then light. The automatic erecting process, the carton blank
magazine, and the side drives start simultaneously.
Cylinder C7 leads cylinder C1 with the suction plate forward. Vacuum is activated, and a carton blank is
collected from the magazine. The carton blank activates photocell S17 which indicates that the carton is
in position. Cylinder C2 leads the supporter flap erecting the carton forward. Cylinder C3 folds the bottom
end flap while, at the same time, cylinder C4 folds the front end flap. At the same time, cylinder C5 folds
the side flaps. Cylinder C4 returns to its initial position. When all four flaps have been folded, vacuum is
disconnected, and cylinder C6 pushes the erected carton forward until the carton is between the side
drives. While the side drives lead the carton through the machine, the carton is glued at bottom.
Cylinders C6, C2, and C3 return to their initial positions. A new process automatically starts.

Also see the survey in the wire diagrams of the machine.

Filling of carton blank magazine

■ Fill the magazine with strapped bundles of carton blanks.
■ Open valve Y31. Cylinders C31 A and B move to their outer positions.
■ Close valve Y31. The suction plate will now move forward and press lightly against the carton
blanks. Now remove the straps.
If the magazine is not completely empty, it can be filled while the machine is operating.

5.4 Stop

Controlled stop
Is used, if a controlled stop is to be carried out for, e.g., small adjustments or due to problems with
equipment further on in the process.

■ Push STOP/RESET ( ). If the carriage has started, the started working process is
ended, and the carriage then stops in its initial position.

■ At restart, push START ( ).

corrected.
