GOPICHANDANA APPLICATION

Gopichandana is nothing but a type of Gopi colour mud, in which Lord Udipi Krishna
was inside, Brought from Malpe and broken at Udipi- found Lord Krishna and installed
Sri Krishna at Udipi by Sri Madhwacharya. Sri madhwar knew that lord Krishna was
hidden in that mud, used by the navigators for balancing the ship, as weight. They had no
idea that Lord was there. It was Sri Madhwa who knew it and beckoned the ship, which
was in state of drowning, to come to him and saved the passengers who offered precious
things, where as Our Madwar asked for these two boulders of Mud, wherein
Odabandeswar and Lord Krishna were there. These Gopichandana are available in
Dwaraka and brought and all Madwas use it as Gopichandana. How too use, significance,
the following would indicate.

Gopichandana Papagna Vishnu Deha Samudbhava|


Chakrankitha Namasthesthu DhaaraNan Mukthido Bhava||

It is not mere smearing Gopichandana paste on the forehead.. There are certain principles,
places and " particular mudres " to be applied at the specified places.

It starts with a prayer:

Gopichandana pRathanam:

Mruththike Dharayishyaami Bhaktyatwam Keshav priye|


Twaya Swapshto Gamishyaami Vishnu Lokam Gatha Sthavaa||

" Hey! Gopichandana! You are washing all our sins. You are born out of Vishnu Deha.
You are having the sign of Chakra. I prostrate to you. Please bestow me Mukthi as I am
wearing you. "

By so praying one should do Gopivhanmdana DharaNa.

Gopichandana Nama Dharane : Say " Om Namah Narayanaya " and apply Gopichandana
to water in your hand. Then start applying in the following sequence and actions :

Gopichandana papaghna Vishnu deha samudbhava


Chakrankita namastubhyam dharanan mukti do bhava ||

Forehead – ( Mantra ) Keshavaya namah ( Lalate Keshavam vidyat)


Stomach mid – Narayanaya namah ( Narayana Mathodare)
Chest center – Madhavaya namah (Madhavam Hrudaye Vidyat)
Front neck – Govindaya namah (Govindam Kantakobhare)
Stomach right – Vishnuvenamah (Udaram dakshine pasve vishum vidya tvytakshinaha)
Right arm – Madhusudhanaya namah (Tatparse bahu moletu dharayan
madhusudhanam)
Right Neck – Trivikramaya namah (Trivikramam Katha deshe)
Stomach left – Vamanaya namah (Vama parsevtu vamanam)
Left arm – Shridharaya namah (Sridharam vamabahotu)
Left Neck – Hrishikeshaya namah (Hrishikesham galelikhe )
Back – Padmanabhaya namah (Prushetu Padmanabhasya )
Behind neck – Damodaraya namah ( Kaku Damodraram dishet)

Evanguna dwadasha murthena stanani vruktani suribhi hi ||

In Krishna Paksha : The actions are the same but the manthra should start with
Sankarshanaya namaha and end in Shri Krishnaya namah.
THE PANCHA MUDRA APPLICATION

The Pancha Mudra details are clearly mentioned. Krishna Charya's Smrithi Muktavali,
Saswatha Samhithe, Chalaarismrithi- Agneya puraaNa, and other granthas, explain the
places where it should be put in. There may be differences here and there. Basically all
are the same. Following the sampraadaya, there is no harm, even if one finds some
differences.

Chakra Mudre:
SudaRshana Mahajwala Koti SooRya SamapraBha|
Ajnaana Andhasyame Nithyam Vishno MaaRgam PradaRahaya||

" Hey SudaRshana Chakra, you are embodied with Mahaajwala and Koti sooRya
Kaanthi, Please show me the Path to Vishnu Marga as I am in total darkness "

Reciting the above sloka one should apply Mudre as follows:

Right slap=1,
Centre of the stomach=5
Centre of the chest=3
Right side of the stomach=2
Right of the chest=3
Right sjoulder=2
Below the Naama of Left shoulder=1
Centre of the neck=1.
Right side of the neck=1
Total = 19.

Shankha Mudre:
Paanjajanya Nija Dhwaana Dwastha paathaka Sanchaya|
Traayhimam aapinan Ghora SamsaaraRNava Paathinam||

" OH! Panchajanya! Your Mere Sound itself washes all sins! Please protect this papi who
has been suffering in the ocean of Ghora Sansaara "

Reciting the above sloka one should apply Shanka Mudre as follows:

Left Cheeck=1
Left side of Stomach=2
Left side of chest=3
Left shoulder=2
Right shoulder=1
Left side of the neck=1.
Total= 10

Gada Mudre:

Bramhaanda BhuvanaaRambha Moola Sthambo GadhaaDharah|


Kaumodhaki Hare Yasya Tham Namaami Gadhdharam||
{Daitya shoNitha DhigDhaange Kaumodhaki Gade vare||
Bhindhi Bhindhi thamo Anthastham Twaam Namaami Punah Punah|}

" Your are the pedestal for the temple of Bramhanda. You are holding the Gade called
Kaumodhaki in your hand. Oh! Shree hari! I prostrate before you.
{Oh Kaumodhaki, you are wet with the bloodshed of Demons.Please take me out
of this darkness called " Ajnaana " . I prostrate before you again and again.} "

Reciting the above sloka one should apply Gadaa Mudre as follows:

On the forehead= 1
Left side of the stomach=1
Left side of the chest =1
Left Shoulder, below Shanka=2
Total= 5

Padma Mudre:

Sansaara Bhaya Bheethaanaam Yogi Nama Bhaya Pradam|


Padma Hasthena Yo Devo Yogeesham Tham Namaamyaham||

:Shree hari is holding the Padma in his hand giving " Abhaya " To those who are afraid
of this Sansaara Bhaya. I am prosptrating to the Yogeesha Shree Hari.:

Reciting the above sloka one should apply PadmaMudre as follows:

Centre of the chest=1


Right side of the stomach=1
Right side of the stomach=1
Right shoulder=2
Total=5

NarayaNa Mudre

NarayaNa Namasthstu Naama Mudraankitham Naram|


Drishtaiva Labhathe Mukthim Chaandalo Brmha Ghaathakah|
(Naama Mudre Namasthubhyam Twadhankitha thanuRhare
Prasaadhadhi Vishnu Loke Hi Chiram Sthaasyaami NiVRuthah|)

" NaarayaNa! I bow to you. Even a papi gets merely mukthi, the moment he has the
DaRshan of a man who has worn your Naamaankitha Mudre. Even a person who has
done Bramha hatya will also get the Mukthi.
( Oh! Mudre who is having the name of NaarayaNa, I bow to you. I am wearing your sign
on my body. I would like to have the Hari's blessings and Anugraha. I would like to have
peaceful life at Vishnu Loka- Please bless me NaarayaNa.) "
Reciting the above sloka one should apply NaarayaNa Mudre as follows:

Forehead=2
On the cheeks= one each
On all Naamaas= one each
On the left and right sides of the Chest=1
