2) System fault level, If = 25 kA, 3 sec.

3) CT Manufacturer = M/s.ETAH, Malaysia

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,2
b) Lead Resistance Calculation

2.5 Sq.mm Cable

From Manufacturer’s table,

With a size of 2.5 sq.mm cable the lead resistance = 7.41 Ohms/Km
at 20ºC
= 0.00741 Ohms/Meter

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,3
Temperature co-efficient of resistance ( 20) = 0.00393

RL at 75 C = R 20 [ 1 +  20 (T2 - T1) ]

1.1) CT Requirement for Transformer Differential Protection

The relay for this protection application will be mounted at 132kV Relay panel.

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,7
Calculation of VK at 11kV Side

As per M/s.Reyrolle recommendations, the knee point voltage of CT’s is governed by the
following relation :

Vk  4I (A + C)

Vk = Knee point voltage in volts

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,8
I = Either the maximum three phase through fault current limited by the
Transformer impedance or the high set setting which ever is greater.

A = CT Sec. resistance at 75C in Ohms. = 14 Ohms.

C = CT Sec. loop resistance = 2 x 0.45 = 0.9 Ohms.

Transformer impedance considered = 31.5%

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,9
Fault MVA = 50 = 158.73 MVA
0.315

The maximum through fault current = 158.73 x 103

 3 x 11

= 8331 Amps

Corresponding secondary current = 8331

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,10
= 2.6 Amps

Doc.No.CE093A/GS/D04/0301

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,11
Hence, the selected value of I = 3 Amps

Vk  4 x 3 (14 + 0.9)

1.2.1) Calculation of Knee Point Voltage VK :-

The calculation of knee point voltage for REF Protection is carried out as per

Application : Metering
Type/Make : Energymeter - Prometer 3222, M/s.CEWE,Sweden
MDI 244-16XG, M/s.Crompton
CT Ratio : 400/1A

2.1) Calculation of Burden at Rated Current :-

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,106
1) Energy meter (Prometer) = 0.2 VA (For R & B phases)

2) MDI = 2.5 VA (For Y phase only)

3) Cabling loop = 0.09 VA

Total burden = 0.29 VA (For R & B phases)

= 2.59 VA (For Y phase)

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,107
2.2) Verification of Instrument Security Factor :-

Connected burden VA device = 0.29 VA (For R&B phases)

= 2.59 VA (For Y phase)

Rated burden VACT = 10 VA

Rated Fs (N) = 5

CT CALC-093-GS-11kV SWGR,108
In order to maintain the rated instrument security factor 5,the rated burden shall be
equal to the connected burden. In this case, the connected burden is 0.29VA for R&B
phases and 2.59VA for Y phase. However, the higher VA rating is possible since the
ISF of energy meter is 40xIn for 1 sec. & for MDI 20xFL for 1 sec. Hence the CT
shall be supplied with more rated burden.

are supplying CLX CTs for transformer differential protection.

The knee point voltage, as per relay manual is
