A3.0 Terms and Definitions

3.0 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

3.1 Sound pressure measurement procedures shall be made in accordance with ASA S1.13,
Measurement of Sound Pressure Levels in Air.

3.2 Required sound pressure levels and insertion loss (attenuation) values are specified on
the silencer datasheet.

3.3 Required and guaranteed sound pressure levels are measured at a distance of 3 meters
from the extreme outside point of the opening, perpendicular to the direction of flow, and
shall also be included for vent or suction silencers. For in-line silencers, sound pressure
levels shall be provided at a distance of 1 meter from pipe or duct, 3 meters downstream.

3.4 Silencers inherent self noise shall be taken into account in their design with special
attention given to casing radiation to ensure that the regenerated noise does not exceed
the allowable sound pressure level

4.0 TERMINOLOGY

4.1 dBA: Sound pressure level in decibels (reference 20 by 10:(-6:) newtons per square
meter) as read on a sound level meter set to the A weighted network, slow response
setting.

4.2 A-Weighted: A-Weighted means a specific weighting of the sound pressure level for the
purpose of determining the human response to sound. The specific weighting
characteristics and tolerances are those given in ASA S1.4.

4.3 PWL (Sound Power Level): Expressed in decibels (reference 10:(-12:) watts).

4.4 SPL (Sound Pressure Level): Expressed in decibels (reference 20 by 10:(-6:) newtons
per square meter).

4.5 Sound Attenuation: The reduction of sound by various means.

SPECIFICATION - SILENCERS

5.0 DOCUMENTATION

Supplier shall submit the type and quantity of drawings and documentation for Purchaser’s
authorization or information as listed on the Supplier’s Drawing and Data Commitment Form.

6.0 PERFORMANCE GUARANTEE

Seller shall guarantee the noise level requirements in accordance with the Silencer Datasheet.

7.0 TECHNICAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

7.1 Silencer

A. Silencer design criteria are identified on the Silencer Datasheet. Upstream

pressure and temperature specified for atmosphere discharge silencers shall be
the conditions upstream of valve.

B. Silencer design shall be manufacturer's standard whenever design pressure is

less than 15 psi. Silencer shall be designed and constructed according to ASME
Code Section VIII, Division 1, whenever design pressure exceeds 15 psig.

C. Silencer shall discharge at or below sonic velocity unless otherwise specified on

the data sheet to avoid regenerated noise and damage to internals.

D. Silencer inlet and outlet connections shall follow ASME B16.5. Flanges larger
than 24 inches shall follow API 605.

E. Silencers shall be provided with 3/4 inch minimum size low point drain
connections. Drain connections, except for atmosphere silencers, shall be
flanged with pressure rating equal to the silencer design pressure rating.

F. Packing shall be required to maintain a consistent mechanical and chemical

stability.

G. Silencer casings shall be constructed of carbon steel, 1/4 inch plate minimum.
Internal construction shall also be carbon steel, except wherever the presence of
a corrosive environment requires the use of stainless steel or some special
internal coating.

SPECIFICATION - SILENCERS

H. The minimum corrosion allowance shall be as specified on the Silencer

Datasheet.

I. Each silencer shall be provided with a minimum of 2 lifting lugs. Engineering

lifting components shall be designed to meet ASME B30.20 allowable design
stresses, using 1/3 of yield or AISC allowable stresses with load factor of 1.8 will
meet requirement, unless large factors are required by applicable codes or
standards. This factor includes impact. Lifting lug calculations shall be submitted
for approval.

J. A vertically mounted silencer shall be provided with 4 equally spaced mounting

supports.

K. Silencers shall meet the noise criteria specified in the Marafiq Sound Control
Specification.

7.2 Welding

A. Supplier shall submit to Purchaser the WPS and PQR, for welding, in accordance
with ASME Section IX for review and approval prior to the start of fabrication.

B. A weld map shall be submitted with the WPS and PQR for Purchaser’s review
and approval.

C. Welding, including repairs, shall comply with the requirements of ASME Section
IX and/or AWS.

D. Welding terms and definitions shall be in accordance with AWS 3.0.

8.0 PAINTING AND PERSONNEL PROTECTION

8.1 All carbon steel exposed surfaces shall be shop primed and finish painted in accordance
with Supplier’s standard painting system, unless otherwise specified on the data sheet

8.2 Flanged surfaces shall not be painted

8.3 If personnel protection is required on the datasheet, Supplier shall furnish all necessary
personnel protection material and labor for installation on the silencer in his shop.
Personnel protection shield shall consist of suitable metal guards or shields.
