Musical Arts Education (6020)  Preamble

Musical Arts Education is part of the School Certificate Examination taken at the end of a three-year senior
secondary school course. The course covers Grades 10, 11 and 12.

In 2019, the Examinations Council of Zambia embarked on examination reforms which brought about the
introduction of School Based Assessment (SBA) for all practical papers and changes in some theory papers.
During the process of the examination reforms, the Musical Arts Education examination papers were
analysed and the Examination Syllabus was revised. Consequently, the three examination papers which were
previously administered have been reformed. Paper 1 (Listening) has been combined with Paper 2
(Composing) to form one paper called Paper 1 (Listening and Composing). On the basis of the revised
Examination Syllabus, a specimen paper (Paper 1) has been developed. What was Paper 3 is now Paper 2
as School Based Assessment.

Test Design

The Musical Arts Education examination will comprise two papers: Paper 1 - 6020/1 (Listening and
Composing) to be set by the Examinations Council of Zambia and Paper 2 (Performing) which will be School
Based Assessment.
Paper 1 will have three sections: Section A – Unprepared Listening, Section B – Prepared listening, and
Section C – Composing. The summary of the papers has been done in the table below:
