The first thing you need to do to write a research paper is to choose a topic. In recent years, many
topics have been chosen, some of the best topics have been shared with you on a “list of suggested
topics” document that can be found in Unit 7. For the past few weeks, you have been ruminating over
the possible choices for your topic. As you are choosing your topic, be sure that the topic is specific
enough to create a paper that flows well in your writing. Too broad of a topic can create holes in the
paper’s structure. Too narrow of a topic will lead you to fall short of the minimum word count.

My Topic is: The brain and how it communicates with the body

The best questions to ask yourself when thinking of a good Research Paper Topic:

 Is my topic specific enough to cover the 1750-word minimum while maintaining a well written
paper?
 Most importantly, does this topic interest me?

Submit your topic to the ‘7.01 Graded Assignment: Research Topic’ Assignment box by Friday before
class at the end of Week 2 of the Semester 1 Project and then check back later to see my comments.
