Q1 (a) List the objectives of classifying soil for engineering purposes.

(3 marks)

(b) Discuss the difference liquid limit, plastic limit and plasticity index and how
they are measured.
(10 marks)

(c) Table 1 shows the results obtained from a liquid limit test in the laboratory.

Determine;
(i) The liquid limit
(8 marks)
(ii) The plasticity index if the plastic limit was 18%

(4 marks)

Q2 (a) Figure Q2 (a) shows the soil element in natural state and three phase of the soil
element diagram. Label the suitable symbol of (a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (f) and (g).
(7 marks)

(b) The mass of a moist soil sample having a volume of 0.0045 m3 is 8.7 kg. The
moisture content and the specific gravity of the soil solids were determined to be
19% and 2.7 respectively. Calculate
(i) Moist density
(ii) Dry density
(iii)Void ratio
(iv)Porosity
(v) Degree of saturation
(10 marks)

(c) The soil sample has a porosity of 0.45, specific gravity of the soil solid of 2.68
and the moisture content of 12 %. Examine the mass of the water to be added to
