MEDIA AND INFORMATION: AFFECTS COMMUNICATION


Communication is the act or process of using words, sounds, signs, or behaviors to
express or exchange information or to express your ideas, thoughts, feelings, etc., to someone
else (http://www.merriam-webster.com).
It is also the exchange of information and the expression of feeling that can result in
understanding (http://dictionary.cambridge.org).
There are two basic types of Communication – 1) Non-verbal communication and 2)
Verbal Communication. Signs, Symbols, Colors, Gestures, body language, and facial
expressions are examples of non-verbal communication. Oran and written are examples of
verbal communication.

A. Media
Using communication tools, e.g. internet, television, newspaper, magazine, radio

B. Information
Based on data, knowledge derived from study, experience, or instruction, signals or
symbols, knowledge of specific events or situations.

How does media and information affect communication?


Instruction: Create a log that reflects your current use and interaction with media and
information. Look at the sample below.

After creating a log, answer the following questions below:


1. Why do you spent too much time on this media or information provider (based on your
media log)? What does this media or information provider give you?

2. Describe communication if there is no Facebook, Tweeter, Instagram, and other social


media.

3. How important media and information is in today’s communication?

4. As a learner, how can you achieve an effective communication with the people around
you?
