Explain the leadership style(s) which is/are being used in the company
management , Provide reasons for and against the identified style(s)
 UAP old mutual insurance company basically uses the employee oriented style
 Definition :Employee oriented leadership style is a leadership style where leaders
care for the employee welfare and needs, employees also participate in the decision
making process
 Below are the reasons as to why UAP OLD MUTUAL INSURANCE(U) LTD
uses the above style
 The style motivates the employees, for example in uap old mutual insurance limited
every employee is given a chance to rise up his/her point of dissatisfaction as it
regards to the job hence motivating workers.
 The style builds up strong relationship between the top managers and the lower
managers,for example in uap old mutual insurance limited their lower managers are
also given a chance to interact with their top managers thus building a strong
relationship between the top managers and their subordinates.
 The style is the most appropriate style of leadership basing on the company goals and
objectives .that is to say, insurance, investment, and savings where by the top
managers put much emphasis on the employee welfare and needs as well as the
company mission.
 The style also improves on the efficiency; this is through motivation of workers there
by increasing quality products.
 The work environment becomes friendly and pleasant to every one since no much
restrictions are put onto the employees

 Employee welfare is being considered which motivates them to work hard, for

leaders.

 Effectiveness of a leader is the ability of the leader to influence the followers,
enable them perform the required tasks to achieve the intended goals.
 Below are the factors that affect the effectiveness of leaders or managers.
 Past experience .leaders who have used the employee oriented style of leadership
style and found it effect ive wills continue using it even in the future, however
those who have found it inappropriate will opt another approach, for example

they faced a high level of employee turnover while using the task oriented
leadership style.
 Leadership personality. A style not consistent with the leaders personality may
not be effective, aggressive leaders will always opt for task oriented approach

E. How can the organization improve the effectiveness of its leaders and managers,

can improve the effectiveness of its leaders and managers
 Demonstrating a motivating vision of where the company is heading with
a relative mission which motivates the employees in working harder in
order to achieve it and places the customer as the top priority.
 Equipping leaders with knowledge of leadership style being used in the
organization by their superiors, this can be done through training leaders
in their orientation period.
 Making balanced, timely and effective decisions to keep the business
moving forward.
 Giving and receiving effective feedback to enable support and
development, this can be done through evolving employees in decision
making.
 Creating a sense of fairness ,equity and respect within the environment
and its process, this can be effective through closely relationship between
the leaders and their sub ordinates
 Improving on communications of leaders. This not only involves good
speaking skills but also good listening skills and the ability to interpret the
body language .This can be done through having a clear line of authority
among managers through which information flows .
 Building self confidence among leaders. An effective manager is expected
to possess a realistic degree of self-confidence which can be gained
through employee recognition for the task well accomplished.
 Motivate others that is to say get to know each employee and recognize
what motivates and inspires them this can help leaders to influence the
subordinates and motivation enables them to perform the required tasks so
as to achieve the set goals.
 Model great leadership for others that is to say the superiors should exhibit
their leadership practices in a way that inspires the upcoming ones to carry
out the same practices.
 Acknowledge employees contributions at both individual level and macro
team level which will motivate the sub ordinates to work hard hence
making the style effective.
 Equipping leaders with technical expertise for the job . this can be done
through giving employees scholarships for further studies abroad so as to
possess technical professional and expertise for the job .
