(there are three types: impaired glucose tolerance only, impaired fasting glucose only, and both IGT

and IFG) in medical

residents in the Philippines. He will base his estimate from the study of Jimeno and colleagues titled: Prevalence of Diabetes
Mellitus and Pre-Diabetes in the Philippines: A Sub-study of the 7 th National Nutrition and Health Survey (2008). How many
medical residents must he sample in order to have an accurate estimate of prediabetes in his population?

1. Ho: There is no statistical difference in the prevalence of pre-diabetes between medical residents and the population
of the Philippines.
Ha: There is a statistical difference in the prevalence of pre-diabetes between medical residents and the population of
the Philippines.

Clearly, the study basis given in the clinical scenario shows that it is a prevalence study. Therefore, the statistical
analysis to be used would be a Descriptive Test. According to the study, the estimated national prevalence of pre-diabetes as
follows: IFG 2.7%, IFG and IGT 0.5%, and IGT 7.0, using the WHO criteria is 10.2%. This data can be used to estimate whether
there is a difference in the prevalence of prediabetes on the sample size used. The estimated national prevalence, 10.2% would
be the reference for the general population. Additionally, it was mentioned in the study that the population was 6,177 aged
20+.

Based on the study, the following are important values:

 6177 – population size (N)

 10.2% - estimated national prevalence (P)
 5% - recommended precision (d)

A statistical analysis calculator was used to determine sample sizes that are comparable to the reference population. The
results were the following:
From the results, it is safe to say that Jack must sample 138 medical residents in order to have an accurate estimate of
prediabetes in his population.
