Tomorrow these rates could be quite different. A change in the exchange rates means that
you will get more or fewer American Dollars to the £ sterling.
Exercise 1

this information for your tutor)

in different countries and exchange offices.
a) £10 = €_____
c) € 316 = £______
3. Using the exchange rates that you found in the newspaper or on the internet
(question 1), recalculate the figures in question 2.
a) £10 = €_____
c) € 316 = £______
4. If you have access to the internet find sites that show prices in difference currencies
and convert the prices to £ sterling.
When on holiday abroad, it is useful to be able to estimate quickly how much things cost.
1
a) Multiply by 1
2
b) Divide by 3, multiply by 2
a) Divide by 2
£1 = $1.46 = €1.58
a) $150
b) €30
c) €200
d) $28
Time
01/01/2002 01/01/02
In the United states the month is put first e.g. Jan 01, 2002.
This can be confusing if you don’t know which format is being used e.g. 4 th March
2002 could be written 04.03.2002 or 03.04.2002.
Exercise 2
a) 31.12.02
b) 10.23.02
c) 06.12.02
d) 07.08.02
To make things even more confusing, occasionally the year may be written first. The
4th March 2002 would then become 02.03.04. It is very important that you make sure
you know how the date is shown before you do any calculations.
2. You are flying out to you holiday destination on Friday 28 th May, returning 10
days later. What day and date will you return?
3. Your flight takes 7 hours 20 mins. If you leave at 22.38 hrs and clocks go
forward 1 hour on the flight, what time do you arrive at your destination?
5. Turkey Dinner
Menu
14-16 lb 1 20 – 40 people
4 hrs
2
Dinner should be cooked by 14.00 so that you can eat dinner before the Queen’s
speech at 15.00.
Distance
5
In Europe distance is measured in kilometres. 1 Kilometre = mile.
8
To calculate how many miles are shown on the road signs you must divide by 8 and multiply
by 5.
24
Eg 24 kilometres = 5 = 15 miles.
8
Exercise 3
a) 72 km
b) 44 km
c) 516 km
d) 139 km
2. Using maps and distance charts estimate the distance between your home
town/village and the following places:
Miles Kilometres
a) Bath
b) Winchester
c) Norwich
d) Kendal
e) Haltwhistle
