Getting geared up for First Race of the Day

It was a most gorgeous Saturday, June 20th
morning as the 26th Annual Longest Dam Race
was about to kick off near Fort Peck, headquartered
out of a lush Kiwanis Park (the countryside is so
green right now!). Sponsored by the Glasgow
Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture, the event
was very well attended considering what we’ve
been through these past few months. The above
photo is of the first race of the day which started
on top of Fort Peck Dam, the 5K Run, with
Glasgow’s own Ali Flaten winning the women’s
title. Check out some more results inside.

Area cowboys & cowgirls compete in Poplar Rodeo

The Poplar Wild West Days
kicked off the 2020 Northern Rodeo
Association Tour this past weekend,
June 13th & 14th.
Glasgow rancher and graduate
J Billingsley was second in tie-
down roping, recording a time of
10.8 seconds to cash a check for $386.40.
Havre’s George Marconko won the event with a time of
9.3 seconds.
Following in dad’s footsteps was Billingsley’s
daughter Brooke, who was third in junior breakaway,
recording a time of 9.1 seconds.
Opheim’s Chase Redfield scored a 52 in bareback
riding to finish second. Crow Agency cowboy Tucker
Zingg had a 148 on two rides to take home first place.
Another Glasgow cowgirl, Jill Ferdina, rounded the
barrels in a time of 15.89 seconds to finish fifth in barrel
racing. Billings cowgirl Terri Kaye Kirkland won the
event with a time of 15.52 seconds. A past National Finals
Rodeo qualifier, now at the age of 62 years young and still
whipping up on a field of barrel racers that could be her
granddaughters!
Amber Crowley is a rodeo star
that is following in her dad’s footsteps. The
Poplar athlete won the ladies breakaway,
roping her calf in a time of 2.4 seconds.
A new event was the senior
breakaway with Curt Wittkopp of Circle
recording a time of 3.9 seconds to win
the event. Darryl Crowley, Amber’s dad, was
second with a time of 4.1 seconds.
The Big Timber Rodeo will be held June 26-27
followed by the Opheim Rodeo this Sunday, June 28th.
Debbie Bailey of the Opheim Rodeo Committee is
excited that they are part of the NRA Tour this year as
it should lure more competition this Sunday. We’ll find
out Thursday and have a little rundown on the Opheim
Rodeo contestants on Thursday or Friday. The stock
contractor is Treasure State Rodeo.
Other area NRA Tour events include the Malta NRA
Rodeo on Saturday, July 11th and the Daniels County
Fair Rodeo on Thursday, July 16th.
Although not an NRA Tour event, the annual
Hinsdale Rodeo will take place — as always — July 3rd.
