Hey followers!

Today, I’ve got big news for you! I met Yu Sin last week, and he shared an incredible
story with me. At only 8 years of age, he had started to make clothes for big
companies like Primark, H&M, Zara or Benetton. When Yu was 14 years old, he
started working for a different company, and everything in his life has changed. In
the company that Yu had worked before, working conditions were bad and he
earned 5 cents per t-shirt. On days when Yu felt ill, he could not produce as many t-
shirts as on a normal day, so he earned less money.

In the new company, his work is well-paid because he earns € 20 per day. The boss
respects people’s rights because if someone does not feel well, the worker is
allowed to stay at home.

Sujin is Yu’s friend, and he still works in the company that Yu had left many years
ago. Sujin works 18 hours per day and spends all the money he earns on food for
his family. He is not able to buy other things like a smartphone or new clothes
because his wage is very low. If Yu hadn’t found his new job, he would still work for
the company that doesn’t pay a fair price for people’s work. If Yu still worked at this
company, he would not be able to buy enough food for his family now.

Today, I realized how much power consumers have because the company Yu
started to work for when he was 14 is a Fairtrade partner! Fairtrade gave Yu the
chance to take a step into a better future. If you have had any experiences with
Fairtrade products, I would love to hear them in the comments below!

xoxo Sam

clothes that you never wear. Use your mobile phone to record your vlog.

Talk about the following things:

• Present the three pieces of clothing that you never wear

• Explain why you don’t wear them
• Can you remember where you bought the clothes? Do you think they were
produced under fair conditions? Why or why not?
• What does the fact that all of us have too many clothes tell you about our
society?
