DISASTER AWARENESS, PREPAREDNESS AND MANAGEMENT

Activity

1. Illustrate/draw the behavior of the different disasters or natural calamities in

the Philippines. Show its impact to man, living and non-living things and the
environment.
2. Make a collage with narrative illustration. i.e.: volcano. The Taal Volcano
eruption in Batangas on January 2020. Use crayon or water color for the
illustration.

Yolanda Season that destroyed house, kills thousands of people, and destruction of
infrastructures.
3. Draw at least 4 different scenes with narrative illustration. Choose 3 natural
calamities. Write a short reflection on each illustration. Use long bond paper.

LANDSLIDE
TYPHOON

A typhoon is a Pacific Ocean cyclone which making landfall in a different parts of the
world. These storms are more frequent and more intense than hurricanes. Typhoons come from
warm surface water in the ocean which forms high winds; lots of rain, infamous for their
destructive powers, and can also cause storm surges. Their effects range from structural
damage to trees, buildings, and long term impacts on human life and livelihood. Wind and
water account for the two most destructive forces associated with typhoons. Typhoons affect
building and other infrastructure that causes physical damage, can pick up tree branches,
building materials and other debris. Its impact extends to natural environment that destroy and
damage trees and other vegetation like crops. Flooding can over saturate soils, drown
vegetation or kill plant life by saltwater produces from storm surges. The destructive forces of
typhoon also impact lives of both humans and animals that may kill or injure people from flying
debris and may spread disease from flood. We must always be aware from this natural disaster
so we can save lives as much as possible.
FOREST FIRE

Forest fires are out of control, many millions of hectares have burnt, fire problems are
increasing, and all of these affect health and livelihoods of millions of people costing billions of
money. Fires, both man-made and natural, contribute to forest loss. This is a concern not only
because it is a threat to biodiversity but also deforestation which is also a key emitter of carbon
dioxide. Fires have the potential to be harmful to forest ecosystems and can be devastating to
human communities. They can affect the supply of local communities and threaten the survival
of endangered species. Wildfire can occur naturally from the sun or lightning strike but most
wildfires are started by human carelessness. Unlike many natural disasters, forest fire can be
prevented through using caution, taking preventative measures, and monitoring fires
responsibly, threats can be lowered.
VOLCANIC ERUPTION

Volcanic eruptions can be extremely damaging to the environment, because of the gases
found here. It typically consists of water vapour, sulful dioxide gas, and also contains carbon
dioxide which adds to the natural greenhouse effect. Sulful dioxide cause environmental
problems because they are converted to sulphuric acid that is the main cause of acid rain.
Volcanoes affect people in many ways, some of the bad ways are infrastructures, roads, and
fields are fully covered with ash. If the ashfall is really heavy it can make it impossible to
breathe. Another negative effect of it is all man made and natural landscapes can be destroyed
and will be changed forever. Volcanoes can also change the weather which causes rain, thunder
and lightning. People will also lose their possessions as volcanoes destroy houses, roads and
fields. Aside from the bad ways, it also have some postive effect like it produces spectacular
scenery, and produces very rich soil used for farming.
