SPORTS AND RECREATION

Enhancement activity:

1. Give your insights regarding some traditional sport like “patintero” to be

slowly being forgotten and not being popular to millenials? Is there a way
that these kind of sports be revived and be used in sports competition?

In an effort to revive this cultural treasure, these games can be played in a competition and
we must build infrastructures for Larong Pinoy with a sports training and systematized
tournament. Schools and barangays should participate in the game mechanics and tournament
rules. Our society should come to recognize that healthy activity can nurture social regeneration
and crime reduction which can also transform people. We must also prevent buying expensive
toys but rather having someone who will play with you without the need of anything. These
traditional Filipino games need to be kept alive before they are forgotten by the younger
generation because they are such an important part of our culture.

2. Have you tried playing one kind of traditional sport? Describe your experience
of it?

I actually have tried many Larong Pinoy like patintero, sipa, luksong baka, luksong lubid and
luksong tinik. I play these kind of games in my childhood times and high school life. I also
prefer playing outside with my cousins than playing dolls before. These kinds of games are
played mostly by boys and we are only a few girls so I was mistaken by them as boyish. But it
is okay as long as I have fun with my playmates. It can be tiring but nothing can be exchanged
from this experience. Without the use of technology, I am free to run, perspire, and enjoy my
childhood. I also experienced a mild injury while running but that scar can be healed so I still
continuously playing. We are not in the trend to sleep in the whole afternoon because we make
time for playing until the sun is down. We may be scolded by our parents but the play will
always be on play. If there will be a free time, I want to play these games again with my new
friends.
3. How can you keep old traditional sport alive? Is it possible?

The revival of traditional sports can help to save culture and identities of the country so we
must take an action to encourage more children to participate in this kind of traditional sports,
we should nurture their interest, and tell all of the benefits of Larong Pinoy. We must not forget
our own games and we must still play it in any occasion. We should keep them alive and make
sure that the future generations will take an interest so we can protect our country’s value. It is
possible to revive traditional sports as long as we will all cooperate and we must not entertain
the children to technologies at their early age. They must enjoy the nature first and they must
enjoy their childhood because it will never come again. The Filipino games is timeless, all of us
must cherished it because it is part of our heritage, no matter what age level you are. It should
still be played especially those children who have no access to any technology. We must love
things that are Filipino, we should play games for bonding among youth and even elders and
we must enliven communities by bring back the fun in neighborhoods.
