LOST

Covid-19 was still taking victims. We were stuck in our grand

parent’s house in Bukit Mertajam. There was not much to do. My sister
and I whined to our parents that we were bored, not because we know
there is something they can do about it but because there was no solution
to the never ending boredom. Suddenly, my father said “let’s go to Hutan
Lipur Cherok To’Kun. It is a forest, surely there are no people and that
means, no corona virus!” we jumped up and down screaming “let’s go
jungle trekking!!!” while our mother chuckled, looking at us.
We brought the essentials and went immediately. It was 10am when
we got there. Soon the sun greeted us but we feel no heat as the forest is
always cool because of the trees. We walked and looked at the flora and
fauna while googling the names of the species we could find. We walked
awhile until mother said “eh? No signal” but we thought nothing of it. We
had such fun, we did not realise that it was already 3pm. We got hungry
and laid the picnic mat to eat and drink. There was sandwiches, fried
noodles, lime juice and potato chips. As we were eating, I noticed
mother’s face had changed. “what is wrong, mummy?” mother pretended
to calm down and said “nothing. Eat your fill. Honey? Do you know were
we are?” I realised that mother was scared of being lost. Father said that it
is alright because we can just ‘google maps’ our way out. Worst come to
worst, we could call for help.
My father was wrong. There was no signal. We walked around while
watching our phone, hoping to catch a glimpse of a signal. Everyone
started to panic. After a while, our batteries started to die. The forest
started to get darker and darker. Shadows became longer and longer.
Birds no longer chirp. My little sister started crying when she heard a
scary noise. “Is daddy’s little baby scared? Its just the sound of foxes” I
know that my dad is right but we all cannot help but think of monsters
and ghouls. We had no idea what time it was but we all let out a huge
breath of relief when we saw light. It was a rescue team of firefighters. It
turns out that granny became worried and had reported us missing. By the
time we reached home, it was 10pm. I was so tired, I did not remember
falling asleep. We learnt our lesson and stayed home during the rest of
MCO.
