I. OBJECTIVES
A. Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students must have:
1. Discussed the short story The Last Leaf by O. Henry;
2. Shown a better understanding of the story by unlocking their difficulties with the
unfamiliar words taken from the story.
3. Valued the moral lesson of the selection in relation to the theme; and
4. Written an essay in relation to the themes in the story.
B. Content Standards:
The learner demonstrates understanding of how world literature and other texts types
serve as sources of wisdom in expressing and resolving conflicts among individuals,
groups and nature; also how to use evaluative reading, listening and viewing strategies,
special speeches for occasion, pronouns and structure of modification.
C. Performance Standards:
The learner skilfully delivers a speech occasion through utilizing effective verbal and
non-verbal and ICT resources.
D. Learning Competencies/Objectives:

B. Motivation
 It seems that you really understood our previous topic but before we proceed to
our next lesson, let us first have an activity.
(The teacher will ask students to read the title of the short story. Then, have
them examine the photo carefully. Based on these sources, the teacher will
ask students to create a list of words and ideas  that they think might be
related to this article.)
C. Presenting the objectives
 Our activity has something to do with our lesson for today. Here are the
objectives of our lesson.
 Okay, please read in chorus…
 Now that you all know what our objectives are for today, let us work hand in
hand to achieve all of those, are you willing to do that?
B. During the Lesson

1. Pre-reading
 The pictures that you’ve seen have something to deal with our lesson for today.
But before that I have few questions for you. (The teacher will call 1 to 3
students to answer each questions as part of their pre-reading discussion.)

The students have to discuss the following questions.


a. Did you ever have to take care of a good friend when they were very ill? If you have,
describe the situation. How did you feel?
b. Have you ever been very ill? If yes, describe what it was like.  Did someone take care
of you? Describe this person.

c. If a good friend of your got sick, would you take care of them? Explain why or why
not.
d. In which season are people more likely to get sick? Why?
 I asked those questions for you to draw some events in the story.
 For further understanding of the selection, you have to be familiarized with these words
(The teacher will post sentences taken from the story. Then, the teacher will place
students in groups and have them infer the meaning of the words in bold by matching
their synonyms posted on the other side of the blackboard.)
 Now, let us proceed with the story. I’ll be playing a 15 minutes video clip based from
the adaptation from the short story entitled The Last Leaf by O. Henry. Then you have
to read its subtitle silently from the hand-out that that I’ll be giving to you.

2. While reading
 Now that we have finished reading the story, let us now answer the following
questions ( the teacher will call some students to answer these questions –
a. Where does the story take place?
b. Identify the main characters in the story.
c. What are the professions of Sue and Johnsy?
d. What is Johnsy’s illness?
e. What is the cause of his illness?
f. What do you think made Johnsy consider that her possible death would be
simultaneous with the last leaf to fall? What is its connection with her illness?
g. What helps Johnsy recover from her illness? Do you think it is psychological in
nature? Why?
h. What are some themes in the story?
i. Why does Sue refer to the painting of the “Last Leaf “as Behrman’s
masterpiece?
j. If you are the writer, how would you end the story? Is it the same how the story
ended?

3. Post speaking
 Did you enjoy the story?
 Did you learn something?
 Do you have questions or additional information that you would like to share in
the class?

C. After the Lesson
