WHAT NEEDS TO BE CITED?

ALL content that you didn’t create (words, ideas, video / audio content)

PAPER FORMAT

● Margins: 1 inch
● Line spacing: Single (double between paragraphs)
● Indent: ½ inch
● Font: 10 or 12 point / Times New Roman or Arial
● Page numbers: Upper right corner
● Headers: Left aligned

IN-TEXT CITATIONS - SUPERSCRIPT NUMBERS

● After the idea, fact, quotation


● Outside periods & commas
● Inside colons & semi colons
● If citing >1 for the same fact / quote:
○ Separate with a comma for 2 consecutive or multiple non-consecutive numbers. 1,3
○ Use a hyphen if using multiple sources with consecutive numbers.3-6

REFERENCE LIST

● Spacing: each reference = single spaced / double space between references


● Each reference is listed in the numerical order that it appears in the article / paper (NOT
alphabetical order)
● Format depends on type of source cited (see below)
● 1-6 authors: list each author in the order that their names appear
● More than 6 authors: lift first 3 authors followed by: et al.
● Sentence case: type as if writing a sentence (only first word capitalized)

○ Journal name: italicized & abbreviated as listed on the National Library of


Medicine database: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/journals

○ PRINT:

■ Author’s last name & Author’s first & middle initial. Title (sentence
case), Journal title (sentence case & italics), Year;volume(issue#):pp-
pp.

○ ELECTRONIC WITH DOI LISTED:

■ Author’s last name & Author’s first & middle initial. Title (sentence
case), Journal title (sentence case & italics), Year;volume(issue#):pp-
pp. DOI.

○ ELECTRONIC WITH NO DOI LISTED:

■ Author’s last name & Author’s first & middle initial. Title (sentence
case), Journal title (sentence case & italics), Year;volume(issue#):pp-
pp. URL. Date published. Date updated. Date accessed.

● Entire book

○ Author’s last names with first and middle initials. Title of Book (title case &
italics). Volume number and title. Edition number. Place of publication:
Name of publisher; Year of copyright.

● Book chapter

○ Chapter author’s names. Chapter title. In Book authors’ names. Book title
(title case & italics). Edition number. Place of publication: Name of
publisher; year of copyright;pp-pp.

● Websites.

○ Author(s). Title of web page (if not title, use name of site organization). Name
of website. URL. Date published. Date updated. Date accessed.
