Grading Alternative
Ungrading
In this process, work is graded as it traditionally has been, then, through revision and
iteration, is gradually improved and ultimately curated.
Grade–>Iterate–>Replace
An assignment of “lesser performance” will be replaced by a revised and improved work
sample that will receive a simple “Pass/Fail”.
Grades simply jump-start the revision process, but the final product receives no letter or
number grade.
Live Feedback
Students are given verbal and written feedback immediately after completing an
assignment.
Live feedback is necessary when children are expected to revise and “improve” their
work.
I have decided to combine these two alternatives but have concluded that this
format best suits younger grade levels since I chose to give a final “Pass/Fail”
grade. I would not recommend using this combination alone after second grade. I
believe using these strategies will give every child room to grow with every
assignment. I think this sort of grading can be used for multiple assignments such
