    In a 1971 study at Stanford University, researchers led by Philip Zimbardo set up a mock prison in the basement of the psychology building and selected 24 male students to play the roles of either guards or prisoners. Over the course of only six days, the experiment was stopped prematurely as things had spiraled out of control, with the guards becoming psychologically and emotionally abusive and the prisoners showing signs of extreme stress. The study provided insights into how social roles and situations can affect human behavior and the ease with which ordinary people can transition into perpetrators of abuse when placed in certain institutional environments.
