How long have you known the candidate and in what capacity?

Ms. Rahat Ul Ain visited the Agumented Vision Research Group (AV), Deutsches
Forschungszentrum fü r Kü nstliche Intelligenz (DFKI), Kaiserslautern under collaboration
with Technische Universitä t Kaiserslautern (TUK), Germany for a summer internship
from 10-June-2019 to 30-August-2019.

During the internship, I supervised Rahat and mentored her. She was responsible for our
collaborative research project "Mobile Electroencephalogram Acquisition and Automated
Classification Assistance (MEAACA) ". To begin with, she was responsible for exploration
of novel architectures of deep learning for said project. She also conducted initial
investigations to compare the conventional approach with more state-of-art approaches
used in Brain Computer Interfaces. Finally, she trained a novel hybrid network (based on
CNN and LSTM) for this project. She was also responsible for keeping both the above
mentioned stakeholders in loop and documentation of the project

Please identify some of the candidate’s strengths with examples.

I have found Rahat to be a hardworking and dedicated intern with a strong attitude
towards high impact factor research. She is also a quick learner, an analytical thinker and
ambitious worker. During her internship, she showed that she could not only work
independently to solve problems, but also assisted her colleagues to put in their best in
order to work as a team together for the realization of common goals. I found her
punctual in the office and even staying late hours for making just another improvement. I
have also found her to be cooperative and active listener in personal communication. Her
public speaking ability is also quite convincing.

Please identify areas of growth/development areas for the candidate.

Having seen her work ethics, I found Rahat to be doubting her efforts and pushing way
too hard on herself which can cause her burn-out in long term. At times this weakness
appears as a slight nervousness too, while presenting or public speaking. She is also quite
detail oriented and may lose sense of bigger picture sometimes. But in the end, she is
always quick to recover, develop a pace and deliver an impactful presentation.

The Fellowship is a two-year commitment to teach in low income community schools
around Islamabad, Pakistan. This requires strong commitment and ability to face
challenging situations daily. In your experience, is there any reason it may be challenging
for the candidate to specifically work and adapt to the culture of low-income communities
in Pakistan?

I found Ms. Rahat Ul Ain a down to earth and well groomed individual, always being
empathic and keen on facing challenges. I hope she can easily adapt herself to the culture
of low-income communities, hailing herself from a humble background.

In your experience, what type of work motivates and demotivates the candidate?

I have seen Ms. Rahat gravitate more towards organized and well-defined tasks compared
to unstructured ones. But she is always flexible and connects well with her work and co-
workers, which helps her to deal with even unstructured situations..

Kindly shed light on the candidate’s ability to work with a diverse set of people.

I have found Ms. Rahat very adaptable and flexible. At first she may come off as reserved
but her ability to adapt to new circumstances and people is remarkable. Her capacity to
connect with people helps make her a great team player.

What advice would you give to the candidate's future manager?

I consider Ms. Rahat to be a smart person who needs encouragement and positive feedback.
I have found that a persistent communication with her is an effective way to motivate her. I
also highly recommend a bit of flexibility and freedom of action in her work, in order to
expect a creative output from her.
