Note: Answer any TREE questions.

1. Derive the Euler’s equation of motion for a steady flow and deduce Bernoulli’s equation.
x y3 2 x3 y 2
2. The velocity potential for ∅ is given by ∅ ¿− −x + + y . Calculate the velocity
3 3
components in the X and Y direction. Check the possibility of such a flow.
3. A pump has a tapering pipe running full of water. The pipe is placed vertically with the diameter
at the base and top being 1.2m and 0.6m respectively. The pressure at the upper end is 240 mm
of Hg vacuum, while the pressure at the lower end is 15 kN/cm 2. Assume the head loss to be
20% of the difference in the velocity head. Calculate the discharge. The flow is vertically
upwards. The difference of elevation is 3.95m.
4. a) Derive Hagen Poiseulle equation for laminar flow through a circular pipe.
b) List the characteristics of laminar flow
5. a) Determine rate of flow of water flow through a pipe of diameter 20cm and length 50m, with
one end connected to a tank and other end of pipe is open to the atmosphere. The pipe is
horizontal and height of water level in the tank is 7.5m above pipe axis. Consider all losses and
assume f=0.01.
a) What are major and minor losses? Give examples.
