Candidate Sim Instruction Ver 1.5 Jun 2018
Candidate Sim Instruction Ver 1.5 Jun 2018
Introduction: The Pilot Simulator Assessment is used to measure expertise of candidates
and consists of three relatively straightforward exercises. The first exercise allows you to
settle into an unfamiliar environment, whilst demonstrating the ability to fly a visual
pattern. The second exercise focusses on asymmetric handling and management, whilst
the third is an all‐engine instrument handling exercise. Throughout the session you will be
assessed in seven pilot competencies:
• Problem Solving and Decision Making
• Situational Awareness
• Workload Management
• Handling
• Knowledge
• Leadership, Teamwork & Support
• Communication
Your Simulator Assessment will be flown in the Dubai Airport (OMDB/DXB) environment
and other nearby aerodromes: OMDW, OMRK, OMFJ and OMAL. Emirates charts are
published by LIDO, a unique format but very similar to all approach charts. Emirates will
provide you with printed charts at the simulator. If you wish, you can print your own.
Exercise 1
The aircraft is to be flown from take‐off for a visual pattern, visual final and landing, and allows
the candidate to become familiar with the aircraft type if required. It’s a manual handling
exercise where the aircraft is flown with no autopilot nor flight director however, the auto
thrust system and Flight Path Vector/Bird will be available at your discretion. The Navigation
Display (ND) mode will also be at your discretion. The ILS will not be available, but PAPI is.
Exercise 2
The aircraft is to be flown from take‐off for a line oriented exercise. The focus is on
asymmetric aircraft handling and management of the abnormal situation. The module will be
initially flown with no autopilot but with Flight Director and auto thrust system available. After
take‐off, once the aircraft is at a safe height and configuration, the autopilot will be available
to allow management of the situation. When the approach brief is complete, a manually
flown engine‐out ILS approach is to be flown. The Navigation Display (ND) mode will be at
your discretion.
Exercise 3
The aircraft will be repositioned to the base leg with an intercept to ILS final. The approach
will be an all‐engine raw data ILS. The module will be flown with no autopilot, flight director,
but auto thrust system will be available. The use of the Flight Path Vector/Bird will be at the
discretion of the candidate. The Navigation Display (ND) mode will also be at your discretion.

For your consideration, you will be assessed in either B777 or A380. Although we will
do everything we can to allow you to conduct the SIM assessment in the same type
advised to you, last minute changes may be made due to unforeseen circumstances.
The simulator is conducted by an Emirates Type Rating Examiner (TRE) and Pilot
Selection Specialist (PSS). Candidates may choose to occupy either seat, whichever
you are more comfortable with. The TRE will operate the simulator and function as
ATC, cabin crew positions and company frequency as required. The Pilot Selection
Specialist (PSS) will function as Pilot Monitoring (PM).
Emirates does not expect candidates to be familiar with the aircraft type used for the
assessment. You will be expected to follow your own aircraft FCOM and company
SOPs.
Call for flap/configuration change as you would on your own aircraft type. The PM will
configure and perform speed selections ensuring a safe operating state.
We look forward to welcoming you to Dubai, and we wish you the best of success!
