What is Reliability and Validity?
Reliability and validity are the concepts which are used to evaluate the quality of
research. They indicate how well a method technique or test measures something.
Reliability is about the consistency of a measure, and validity is about the accuracy of
a measure.

It’s important to consider reliability and validity when you are creating your research
design planning your methods, and writing up your results, especially in quantitative
research.

Reliability
Reliability means how consistently a method measures something. Like if the same
result can be consistently attained by using the same methods under the same
circumstances than the measurement is considered reliable.

Example
A doctor will use symptom questionnaire to diagnose a patient with a long term
medical condition. Different doctors use the same questionnaire with the same patient
but give different diagnoses. This indicate that the questionnaire has the low reliability
as a measure of the condition.

VALIDITY
Validity tells that how much sound your research is. Validity applies to both the
design and the methods of your research. Validity in data collection means that your
findings truly represent the phenomenon you are claiming to measure.

Example
If the thermometer shows different temperature each time even when we controlled
the conditions to ensure the samples temperature stays the same the temperature is
probably malfunctioning and therefore its measurement is not valid.
