Question 1:

On looking at the questionnaire, Jemma noticed some problems with the way in which some
questions had been coded.

A) What were these problems?

There are many problems with the way in which questions have been coded:
1. All the options look very congested
2. Questions have not been numbered properly
3. There is no option for “neutral”
4. There is no option for the people of age of 31 to 34
5. Statements for the questions are very ambiguous

B) How might these have been overcome at the survey design stage?
1. By listing the options in a proper order so they don’t confuse the respondent.
2. By providing all the suitable options (for example “neutral”)
3. By using clear statements
4. Options for question 1 should have also been added as it’s a very general statement
5. Question mark should have also been used with Qs. 1

Question 2:
A) Which of the questions were likely to be most useful to Jemma for her research project?

Question number 5, 6 and 7 are useful for Jemma as these cover the areas of her interest. But for
evaluating the importance of different media for finding about events, there is no clear question.

B) How could Jemma have minimized the impact on her analysis of any coding problems with
these questions?

For question number 5 and 6 multiple response method should have been used as respondent has
marked more than 1 option which shows that there is a possibility for more choices. For question
number 7 an option of “none” should have been added as the respondent has not marked any of
the given choices. This could have minimized the impact of any coding on analysis.

Question 3:
Which diagrams, tables and statistics would you recommend Jemma to use to analyze those
questions which were useful to her research project?

I would recommend Jeema to use bar graphs and pie charts for the representation of different
statements.
For example: bar graphs can be used for representing options that include numbers (like age of
the respondents) and pie charts can be used for question number 6 and 7.
