This Happening is called a Panoramic Sea Happening. It does happen on the
Baltic Sea beach in a village Eazy distant two miles and a half from
Osieki and sixteen miles from Koszalin the included sector of the beach
is about 1100 yards long the presence of the sea should impose itself
by motion, rythm and sound texture within human perceptual capacity.
THE SEA CONCERTO

Chairs are situated on the sand several hundreds of chairs in regular
intervals and rows the front rows are gradually submerging in the sea

in all directions with full understanding of the significance of the
arrangement absurd and obsessive in itself
this being an orderly adjusting obedient shaping checking
loyalty the sedentary square on the sand all of
it turned towards the sea in which it is gradually sinking
a motor boat brings a conductor*) in a full evening dress to a pageant yonder
in the sea he mounts the wave-washed steps facing the sea
he raises his hand up the sea concerto begins the obedient
square of the audience flowed by the waves the conductor in his black
dress-coat far from the shore he seems to be more and more remote
the movements of his hands are suggestive hypnotic
he raises his left hand high up along the strand among the public
whizzes a motorcycle at full speed it sprinkles the waves
crazy fast another one after it a third and fourth
fifth a fugue of motorcycles the conductor
raises his right hand from the other side a huge farm tractor is
approaching the din of motors the heavy rattle of the tractor
sprinkles of water rythmic strokes of foamy waves
the conductor shoots right up a rocket a rescue boat is coming from
the sea with its buzzer set on a permeating whistle of the
siren the conductor turns towards the audience he picks dead
fish from a huge bucket and throws them at his listeners methodically
then with growing fury all of a sudden he strips off his dress coat
and keeping it at its sleeves’ ends with its skirts hanging down
he veils his face and so he remains,
THE RAFT OF MEDUSA
August 25, 1967
Three large pontoons moored to the shore are getting fastened together with bars
Put side by side to form a wide decking but the waves are so high that the
pontoons are sunk now they became too heavy to be pushed they have
to get unfastened, water shuffled and poured out with buckets, and then the
pontoons hammered and fastened and mounted again it all takes unbearable lots
of time there is a growing throng crowding on the strand
a troop of soldiers arrives to help.
June 18, 1816
The frigate Medusa attended by three other ships, a corvette Echo, a frighter Loar and
@ brig Argus, left France for Saint Louis, Senegal, with the governor and higher officials
of the Colony on her board. She was bearing about four hundred men, crew and passengers.
‘On the 2nd of July she encountered the d'Arguin bank, and after five days of vain efforts
to launch her to the open, a rajt was built and it took one hundred and forty nine men,
while the rest rushed to life boats. Soon ajter the boats cut away the ropes that were
puiling the raft, thus leaving it on the abyssal waters of the ocean, Hunger, thirst, despair,
armed those people against each other. Finally, after twelfe days of inhuman sufferings,
Argus took aboard fifteen dying men...
Charles Clement, Gericault
The Year 1818
With his soul confused and distorted by remorse, Gertcault set about his life's work: The
Raft of Medusa.

B.*) is hammering a wooden pile deep in the sand he then ties a thick
rope to it he puts its looped end on his neck wrapped in a piece of
linen so bound he walks around the pile as if in a windlass
is it a preparation to the substantial process or a libarating of his
own personality disinterested pure exhibitionism or rash and
risky involvment in a situation that is extremely abusive to conventional
prestige B, is about to do something that would be a sculpture and
a raft and thus it shall be neither something beyond art and beyond
object a pure fact then perhaps merely an act just about
to happen its base had been already built by others he
seems to accept it what remains is the would-be mast, sail, rig-
ging B. adjusts and connects the segments he ties with
ropes and roughly hews with an ax at last what
remains is the consecration the hoisting.
‘The Year 1967
A Happening as I see it is an effort to master an object, to catch it red-handed.
A great precision is required in tracing its proprieties, errors, abuses, fortunes,
its hiddedn and disguised details. There must be intuition to discover the proper
trail and sturdy persistence in gathering insignificant trifles, indications, intelli-
gence. All this process is a sort of an investigation for evidence.
‘Tadeusz Kantor,
On Happening
The Year 1818
With love for exactitude so characteristic for our epoch he made a report of the Medusa
wreckage; he worked as sternly, persistently and minutcly as a public prosecutor. He gathered
@ real dossier packed with all sorts of genuine documents and materials. He entered in
close relations with Messteurs Correard and Savigny, the main actors of the drama tejt
among the living.
He found Medusa’s carpenter, one of the fifteen rescued from death, and got him to make
@ model of the raft being a pedantically exact copy, with all details of carpentry reproduced,
and on the raft he put wax figures.
Charles Clement, Gericault
The Year 1967
I have chanced upon the above note already after the Sea Happening in which
the raft of Medusa was an importan highlight. The exceptional coincidence o?
ideas corroborated the validity of my choice of the theme.
With his Raft of Medusa Géricault initiated a sort of press-news accident report,
but it was his method of working that turned out to be the most interesting.
His passion was most powerfully discharged during the preparatory phase of
collecting and investigating of data and evidence, of discovering the past as
passionately as a full blood detective.

August 25, 196
Now:
A long table covered with a white cloth is set on the beach. On the table there
are handy loudspeakers, reproductions of Géricault’s Raft of Medusa, papers,
pointed pencils. At the table all the jury members are sitting being renowned and
recognized critics. The President of the jury announces the solemn opening of
its workings.
: continued
»The reconstruction of the Raft of Medusa now about to start is not intended to
be a faithful and lifeless copy of the romantic master piece. We encourage every-
body to use any and all objects produced by the modern tourist industry: rubber
mattresses in most gaudy colors, rescue wheels, bikini bathing suits, frotté towels,
nylon ware, plastics, transistor radios ete.
Of course this by no means permits anyone to give up the truth of his motions,
gestures and inner experience. We invite everybody to participate”.
To make the general participation in the creative process at all possible, as well
as to bring about the feeling of group responsibility, a number of reproductions
of a work by Jean Louis André Théodore Géricault "The Raft of Medusa” had
been printed and distributed among the crowd, so that the events can be calmly
followed, improved upon or even judged.
To reconstruct the massive assamblage of bodies, persons from the audience are
invited.
‘The jury members arrange their statures, gestures, compare them with the original,
they explain, discuss, enter into the most minute details. Here are some fragments
as recorded on tape:
The gentleman reposing on his back in the left corner of the picture... _ still
too much life... please relax your whole body... sink somehow into your-
self... your eyes and belly inside down... the head turned back... please
exert yourself... please imagine the uttermost effort of the author... for
several months Géricault’s study was a sort of a mortuary, he used to keep cadavers
there until they rotted... you are one of then... I dare to admonish my
colleagues of the jury that they retained their apodictic propositions... 1 vote
for fainting... we now turn to number two... an old man sitting in a state
of complete prostration... please rest your right elbow on your right knee and
lean the right cheek on the palm... nearer to the ear, please. I need not
mention that you have just lost your son... please tighten your jaws... hunch
the back more... this is helpful in expressing despair... I protest against
exaggerated psvchology... the hunching just connects the back with the head
forming an ideal arch, which relates to the perpendicular of the supporting
elbow... let us not get seduced by the false charms of formalism... I am
positive about that the author had not yet overcome the dry classical rules in
this figure... this character is simply trite and conventional... I assent to
this opinion... if we realize that blood-freezing events took place on that raft,
inclusive of cannibalism, then this idyllic figure of an almost Sybilline
character... let us come back to the son embraced by his father... please
put a sock on your left foot... for the truth’s sake, I demand complete danudation
* Edward Krastiski a sculptor born 1925 h’e lives and works in Warsaw and at Zalesie Gérne.
* Jerzy Bereé a sculptor born in 1950 h’e lives and works in Cracow.
Note: thts unexpected happening arised all by itself
it emerged as a result of circumstances and of the author’s predisposition
it was a pure authentic happening.of the defunct son... I say again that I am voting for agony... the sock! ...
the trousers!... I charge you, gentlemen, of mean and wretched puritanism ...
children shall not be demoralized!... ladies and gentlemen, how remote are wer
from the genereous and grand epoch of Romanticism!... let us now turn to
the next group, number five... please fall facing the raft... hands stretched
forward... your back!... show up your back!... all the despair is in the
supine parts!... by the way, it was Delacroix himself who posed to this
figure... the figure on top of the pyramidal composition is a Negro... you
are keeping a shirt in your left hand... please wave it... the shirt is waving
in the wind... you see far away... a ship!...
AGRICULTURE ON SAND
heaps of waste paper are thrown on the sand newspapers
magazines are distributed among the public special instructors
arrange the people in rows in regular intervals when a sign is
given all the people bend down dig each a small hole plant their
newspapers in a proper form bury it stamp the sand
taking care that the newspaper stood out for the prescribed height
the instructors instruct teach watch that the intervals rcmained
regular and the forms uniform one row after another bends
rythmically plants buries in measured spaces a few steps
and bend again plant endlessly the whole column
moves along the beach after its passage hundreds of implanted news-
papers remain a whole field of seedlings.
EROTICAL BARBOUILLAGE
the paste employed has the following ingredients tomato pulp
mixed with a few buckets of oil with an ample supplement of
starch dissolved into gluey pap with sand added in the amount necessary
to keep the general stickiness of the mash its density its gluey
character fatness edible hue the place for the erotical barbouil-
lage is a sort of a large circular dish nine yards in diameter a dozen of
naked girls should be there kept permanently horizontal their expected
movements interlacing wallowing stroking
rolling grinding the gluey and fat pap euphorically convulsively
the rythm of epilepsy would be perfect the whole should make
an impression of moving matter unidentified losing the contours and
shapes of the bodies in a total assamblage in a proper
moment the bodies should be secreted from the general mass
and mix into the audience.
THE SINKING *
Behing the crowd occupied with the erotic barbouillage some people are busy
around a large trunk. They are wrapping it tight in layers of linen and paper.
They are in a hurry. They are Jooking around with anxiety. They are undoing
some string with much pains. They stumble on the mass of papers. They give
orders to each other in a low voice. They act furtively and without anybody’s
permission. They try to realize their aim taking advantage of the gencral
carelessness. To protect the trunk! To save it from destruction! To make fail any
attempts at reaching its contents.
But alas. More and more people gathers around the trunk.
They only succeeded to pack it and stamp it with warnings, instructions, mail
symbols: Attention! Fragile! Ostroénie! Géra! Don’t bend. By boat.
The address: GALERIA FOKSAL PSP — Warszawa, Foksal 1/4.
The rumour goes among the public that the trunk contains a collection of the
Gallery’s important documents. A manuscript of the pedantical chronicle of pseudo-
-artistic events; applications and responses to applications; longplaying recards
with speeches; a full file of press items with critical reviews written by: celebrators,
malcontents, dissidents, admonishing souls, exegetes, abstinents and cyberneticians;
receipes, shorthand revorts. protocols, photographs and photocopies, offers of
