STUDENTS’ GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING RECOUNT TEXT

AT THE 2ND GRADE OF SMPN 1 SAMALANGA

Research Problem

The researcher founds that students mainly made mistake with variety of
grammatical errors in writing recount text and this makes researcher thinks of the
source of the students’ problems in writing recount text. English has been taught
for students as a foreign language since they are at basic level of education.
According to Curriculum of 2013, English is learnt by students since they are in
7th class. When students learn English, they focus on mastering 4 macro skills of
English; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Among those 4, writing is
considered as the toughest skill. Writing skill not only need a lot of vocabulary in
composing a paragraph, but also correct grammars, apart from other writing’s
rules, in order to be comprehensible. As there a different elements between certain
languages, it leads to make a grammatical errors in process of writing as theytend
to translate their ideas from L1 to L2. In addition, the students found difficulties in
choosing the appropriate meaning of the words and also still confuse in using the
word based on context. Students are also still confuse when they found words or
expression that are idiomatic.

Research question

1. What are the sources of errors in the students’ recount text writing?
2. What are the most common types of grammatical errors made by the
students in writing recount text?

Research objective

1. To identify the sources of errors in writing recount text of students in


SMPN 1 Samalanga.
2. To find out the most common types of grammatical errrors made by
students of SMPN 1 Samalanga in writing recount texts.

Theoretical Basis

This study focusses on the students’grammatical errors in recount text


writing. The grammatical errors were classified into; Singular-plural, word form,
word choice, verb tense, add a word, omit a word, word order, incomplete. The
informations to students to develop their ability to be better in writing recount text
and raising their self-awareness of errors. Additionally, this research will pave the
way for rapid development for teachers in finding new method to anticipate
students’ errors in writing. Frequently, recount text is the writing which is most
made mistake by students when writing

Hypothesis

The research might identified some informations which could influence


the students’ of 2nd grade of SMPN 1 Samalanga grammatical errors in writing
recount text. Throughout this research, the weakness of making grammatical
errors in writing recount text can be anticipated briefly. Most of students in 2 nd
grade of SMPN 1 Samalanga cannot differentiate the verb changing and the tenses
because of incomplete learning or students difficulties in comprehend the
materials during the learning process. The students tend to generalize the verb
changing in using the simple past tense in writing recount text. The students tend
to apply Indonesian grammar rule in using the simple past in English in their
writing recount text. By taking recount text as the test, this research is expected to
be able to conclude deeper and clear informations of the subjects’ grammatical
errors problematic.
