sources and the secondary
interpretations made from them.
5. Introduction to Lesson
Teacher will start the class by reviewing information learned in the previous class lectures about
the Mexican American War.
Teacher will inform students they will compare and contrast what they have learned with what the
students of Mexico were taught about the Mexican American War.
Students will work with the same students they have been previously introduced with through
Gridpals.
Students will be informed they will create short video questionnaire with their Gridpals, the
questions should allow for their Gridpals to provide their interpretation of the war.
Some of the questions should include what caused the Mexican American War?, do they have a
different historical name for the war?, along with other questions that may arise from the student’s
response.

6. Explain the skills and/or strategies students will need to work with the technology
Students will connect and collaborate with other students from a different country and culture.
Flipgrid allows students to become digital citizenships by creating a culture that can support safe
and responsible technology use. Students will be able to analyze information given by other
students, and respect the interpretation and perspective of other students. GridPals will allow
students to communicate with other responsibly, and how to respectfully ask and respond to
questions. Rene Hobbs states that one of the media literacy competencies is having the “ability to
engage in reflection…active participation in social action through individual and collaborative
efforts” (2011,p.14). Students will be able to community with other people from another country,
ELLL students would be able to communicate in their native language with students in Mexico.
Student will reflect on the historical perspective of the Mexican government regarding the war with
America. Students will be able to reflect how it affected the United States and Mexico. They will use
their critical thinking skills to analyze both historic context to compare and contrast two different
sources. Students will be respect the viewpoints of their Gridpals, they will be able to use their
critical thinking skills to anylyze information given by their Gridpals. Students will be able to
access information by sharing relevant information while using technology tools, create videos
where they can feel confident in expressing their thoughts with a purpose and knowing their
audience, reflect on the communication behavior and conduct of themselves and their Gridpal, and
act by participating in international level of education. This process “is fundamental to how we
learn and communicate”(Why Digital and Media Literacy, n.d.).
7. Model
When we log into our Flipgrid using our QR code, you will go on to click on the Mexican
American War grid. The page will then open and you would click on the green plus sign. Once
the video opens up, introduce yourself “Hello my name is Ms. Tanya, I am learning about the
Mexican American War, I would like to ask a few questions. When you learned about the war,
who was responsible for the war to start? For us we were told that United States wanted to
expand the country, what about you?”
If you want to hide your face you can insert an emoji, glasses or anything else.
Remember the students who we are connecting with, know how to speak English, if you prefer
you can always ask your questions in Spanish.
Once you have posted your question, added any sticky notes, which are optional, you will post
your video.
Our Gridpals’, will be connected during this time waiting for your questions, the student who has
been assigned to you will respond to your questions through a video as well.
When your Gridpal responds back, you can provide feedback, answer their questions, and be able
to follow up their feedback with more questions.
Make sure you take notes while listening to your Gridpal’s answer, you can always reply the
video while you wait for the follow-up answer.
8. Guided Practice
Prior to this lesson, students would have had whole group instruction in creating a Flipgrid profile.
As a classroom, each student with a technology device, will use the QR code to log in to our
classroom’s flipgrid. The teacher will demonstrate how to log in using the QR code or school email
address, and demonstrate how to access the topic grid, view the teacher’s video prompt and post
their response. Student’s will independently create their first Flipgrid video, and respond to one
other student. Once the students have created their first Flipgrid and responded to a peer, they will
provide a reflection video of how helpful Flipgrid is to them. Do they feel more conferrable
speaking and responding to peers instead of a whole group discussion? For English Language
Learners, do they feel more confident speaking privately with one student instead of the whole
classroom, do they feel more confident taking their time in responding and providing feedback?
9. Assessment/Evidence of Student Learning
Students will do two exit slips using Flipgrid. The first exit slip will be them answering the
following prompt: Name two to three things that was different from the history of Mexico and
America in the War of Mexican American War.
The second prompt will be: Did you find it useful communicating with students from another
country, to gather the perspective and more information of an important history event? Was there
something surprising that you learned from them?
10. Reflection
Write a 2-ish page reflection based on the prompts in the directions on the 1st page above
11. References
Full bibliographic references in APA format of professional sources you cited above
