Part 2.

Abstract
Part 1 of this article discussed the dramatic recent reduction of opportunities to study within our profession. While this has
occurred partly as a result of a push for a Bachelor to become the new minimum standard, Part 1 argued that Bachelor
programs are not always suitable, or even necessary, to produce safe and competent practitioners. Part 2 of this article
argues that industry regulation of our qualifications and colleges is more appropriate, and has been more successful, than
governmental regulation. This regulation would negate the need for our qualifications to be recognised by the Australian
Qualifications Framework (AQF). Current commercial reality shows that the future of our profession is placed at significant risk
should only AQF qualifications be recognised.

Natural medicine and

sustainable healthcare
Sandra Grace | PhD, School of Health and Human Sciences, Southern Cross University

Abstract
Human health is inextricably linked to environmental health. The air we breathe, the water we drink and the quality of
the soils in which we grow our food have a fundamental effect on the healthy functioning of the human body. Natural
medicine has its foundations in practices that promote environmental sustainability through its low impact diagnostic and
treatment approaches and its promotion of healthy lifestyles. It is time to acknowledge the green credentials of natural
medicine practitioners who have long been custodians of sustainable healthcare and for natural medicine practitioners to be
acknowledged as leaders in the field.

√ Therapy covered by Fund Please note that this table is only a guide to show what funds cover ATMS accredited modalities. If the modality that you are accredited for is not listed, this means that no health fund covers the modality. The only
exceptions are Chiropractic and Osteopathy. ATMS accreditation in a modality does not guarantee provider status as all funds have their individual set of strict eligibility requirements. Please see our website
www.atms.com.au or contact our office for current requirements. Rebates do not usually cover medicines, only face to face consultations. For further rebate terms and conditions, patients should contact their health
fund. Policies may change without prior notice.

 ARHG are only recognising Remedial Therapists who are accredited for this modality and were approved for ARHG Provider status under their old criteria.
• ARHG are recognising Chinese Massage, however the eligibility requirements and provider number is exactly the same as Remedial Massage. See ARHG Health Fund Information for further information.
