Punctuality is one of the virtues beyond reproach. Much of the time and wealth
will be saved if its virtue will be carried out to the system of every responsible citizen.
Punctuality will encompass all of the positive action in all aspects. It was less
appreciated in other situations like productivity against punctuality, it is still very vital in
situations that needed it most. This study will determine the factors affecting students in
their daily routine during school days. Often times, being tardy in the flag raising
ceremony, in attending classes after recess time in the morning was an indication that
student had significantly disliked the subjects of Science and Mathematics and might be
the reason for leniency in their study. The aversion towards the matter is merely on the
subject and has nothing to do with the Subject Teacher. Moreover, there are students
who fairly rated their teacher that might affect their performance at school.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The researchers would like to acknowledge first, the Almighty God for His

protecttion, wisdom, for keeping them safe at all times and for making this study a

successful one.

Along the way, there are expert authorities who gives assistance to the

researchers. They gratefully gave them the greatest acknowledgement by mentioning

their names.

Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the study

Students from various places enter to their school for them to learn new things

and gain more knowledge and experience when searching for a job that they want after

their finish their studies.

Students who are always late in class not only lose valuable instrument for

themselves, they also disturb class, interference, with lessons in progress, and disrupt

other students’ concentration. They also interrupt those busy teachers who are not able

on guiding students in their remedial because they have something to do their school-

works such as grades of the students, lessons, etc.

Educators agree that prompt and regular school attendance is an important key

to a student’s success. Students that should taught to demonstrate respect for staff, the

one way to do this is to practice prompt and regular school attendance.

Going to school early before the first period class in the morning is the student’s

first priority. Although there are students living near the school, some of them managed

to be late for their first period class unlike those students living far from the school’s

location. This problem made the researchers to conduct on study why students

Grade12 of Guihulngan National High School-Poblacion residing near the school come

late for their first period class.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Related Concepts

Most of the source defines “tardiness” with similar concepts. Literally, the term

tardiness implies a situation where an individual is late in happening or arriving (Oxford

Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, 2010). Breeze et al. (2010) further suggest that term

tardiness is synonymous with “lateness” (as cited in Nakpodia & Daflaghor, 2011),

either implies arriving after the expected, arranged or usual time (Oxford Advanced

Learner’s Dictionary, 2010). Besides, Free Dictionary (2003), defines tardiness as

coming occurring on remaining after correct, unusual or expected time (as cited

Malik, Ladhanni & Bhamani, n.d.).

Lateness is a form of disruptive behavior. Lateness disrupts the rhythm of the

class lecture, and also distracts other students who may be paying attention to the

lecture. Therefore, the term “class tardiness” has been viewed as student coming late,

not attending lecture on time and missing out initial time from the first period class.

  Related Studies

A research study by Sprick and Daniels (2007) claims that there are no positive

incentives to be on time, and no constructive happen for the first five period class, giving

students the impression that they won’t be missing anything if they are late.

In addition, Nakpodia et.al (2012) going late bed is one of the major causes of

lateness because it could result in waking up late and insufficient rest for the lesson on

the next day.

Moreover, Ukoshi (2004) suggest that individuals involved in watching films and

home videos may be also captivated and hypnotized by it that he/she forgets that

he/she has to be in school and may not punctual. Also, Sprick and Daniels (2007)

further claims that range of teachers’ individual responses is from ignoring them to

sending them to the office and this may cause confusion to the students about the

importance of punctuality in class.

In additional, Schneider (1998) reported that the reality of classroom life may be

different. All faculties are disruptive with students who engage in behaviors to the

educational process. Students maybe late for class, leave early, talk inappropriately or

sleep during class. On the other hand, (Cellular, 1992); low attendance and habitual

tardiness were among the common characteristics of low-achieving high school

student.

Moreover, Wheat (1998)) arrive late, students will find it arduous to pick up what

is being taught in the school in his/her tardiness unless he/she engages in off-campus

productively.

With this review, the researchers found out that some of the Grade 12 students

of GNHS-Poblacion residing near the school went to school late and that the said

researchers were only the one who made this study.

THE PROBLEM

This study gathered the reasons why Guihulngan National High School –

Poblacion students residing near the school come late for their first period class.

Statement of the problem:

To understand why Grade 12 students of GNHS-P living near the school come

late for their first period class.

Specific problems:

1. What did the students do before he/she became late the next morning?

2. How long does it take for him/her to finish his/her basic prepare

before going to school?

3. What time does he/she sleep at night?

4. What time does he/she wakes up in the morning?

5. How many students residing near the school gets late for their first

period class?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The outcome of this research is significant to the following:

Students. This study serves as the basis to identify the reasons on why they are

late for their first period class and for them to cope up with it.
Teachers. This study is to make the teachers be aware on their student’s

performance during class and for them to make some actions with regards to their

students’ need.

Parents. This study will inform them about their son/daughter’s reasons on why

he/she is late for his/her first period class.

Administration. This study is to inform the admins of the school to the

performance of the students and how they will address it.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Method

The researchers used a descriptive type of method. It make use of questionnaire

to gather the desired information and data needed for this study. This method defines

the problem of GNHS-P students residing near the school come late for their first period

class and it provides information about how it happens.

Respondents

The researcher decided to choose only 30 students to be the respondents of the

research out of the 409 Grade 12 students of GNHS-P. The respondents answered the

survey questionnaire properly.

Environment

The school is located in Osmeña Avenue, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental

about 600 meters away from Guihulngan Mega Market. The school is composed of 97

teachers and students but in the researchers’ case, their scope in only the Grade

12 students having the population of 409 students. The figure below shows the map of

the school.
Figure 1. Location map of the study

Figure 2. Grade 12 Building of GNHS-P

Sampling Procedure

This study used a non-probability sampling in getting how many samples should

be taken. The number of respondents was not fixed in each strand and was not

calculated in any statistical formula.

Data gathering

After the survey questionnaire was verified and founded secure by the research

adviser, a letter was written by the researchers to the school principal of Guihulngan

National High School-Poblacion allowing the researchers to conduct a survey using the

survey questionnaire made by the researchers for the Grade 12 students of GNHS-P.

Instrument

The instrument used in this study were survey questionnaires where the

respondents name, age, address and gender were asked. The survey questionnaire

was composed of yes/no type of questions and some questions only require them to

choose on the choices provided.

Statistical Treatment

This study only used simple percentage formula. Formula stated below:

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter contains the summary and conclusion that is applicable in making

recommendations of this study.

SUMMARY

This study aims to find the reason why students residing near the school comes

late for their period class. The student's sleeping time, waking up time and how they

spend their time before going to school were asked from them through the survey

questionnaire.

Moreover, the findings of this research shows that students residing near the

school usually sleeps to 8-9 p.m. and 10-12 p.m. and wakes up commonly on 6-7 a.m. .

It is also discovered that 15 out of 30 students residing near the school comes late for

their first period class

The method used in this study is descriptive which used to describe the reason

on why they are late for their first period class with the use of the survey questionnaire

which were provided by the researchers.

Tabulation, analysis and presentation of the gathered information and data was

done through frequency count and simple percentage.

CONCLUSION

The result of this study led the researchers to a conclusion. It can be said the

some of the students residing near the school don't manage their time well. Some of

them sleep at 10-12 p.m. and wake up at 6-7 a.m.. Even though they are residing near

the school, 50% of them manage to be late for their first period class.

RECOMMENDATION

Based on the gathered information and findings, the students who gets late for

their first period class is not okay when they are late in their first period class. However,

the researchers would like to recommend the teachers to counsel the student with

regards to his/her tardiness. As for the parents, the researchers would like to

recommend to monitor the activities of their children.
