Annual Investment Report 2019-2020
The Annual Investment Report for 2019-2020 has a section on the Fixed Income and Equity Market Outlook as of March 2020, investment strategy going forward and
highlights the key risks to be understood while investing in the equity and fixed income markets.
The Annual Investment Report gives details of fund’s Portfolio, Sectoral exposure, Asset allocation, Rating Profile, Maturity profile, Duration as well as Performance
(Returns) of the funds against the relevant benchmarks across various time horizons.
Equity Market
The month of March 2020 saw the benchmark indices S&P BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 shed around 23%. The Mid-cap index, Nifty Mid-cap100 shed around 30%
during the same period.
In the month of March, Indian equities participated in a global sell off on the back of the intensification of the coronavirus situation into a global pandemic which has
resulted in a lockdown of a large part of the world economy in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. Global central banks reacted to the ongoing pandemic by
effecting outsized rate cuts and infusing ample liquidity even as many governments unveiled large fiscal stimulus packages to protect the vulnerable sections of the
society as well as support economic activity. The RBI, on its part, slashed the repo rate by 75 bps to 4.4% and committed to maintaining adequate liquidity in the
economy. FIIs were net sellers in Indian equities to the tune of around US$7.9 bn in the month of March while DIIs were net buyers of around US$7.5 bn in the same
period.
The Government of India unveiled a Rs1.7 tn fiscal stimulus package focused on providing food security, direct cash transfers to vulnerable sections of the society,
employment support through payment of the PF contribution for three months for low-wage workers in smaller firms, transfers to construction workers, and enhanced
credit support to low-income households through women self-help groups.
The RBI, on its part noted the broad based impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the Indian economy, the extent depending on the intensity, spread and duration
of the pandemic. They expected many sectors to be at risk of not able to meet their obligations to the financial system on account of the lockdown impacting their
cashflow. Hence, the RBI decided to permit all financial institutions to allow a moratorium on term loans and a deferment on payment of interest in lieu of working
capital facilities to ease the financial stress building up in the economy and offset to an extent the system wide dislocations. Moreover, in an effort to improve market
sentiment, the RBI has assured that it will do whatever is necessary to shield the economy from the impact of the pandemic.
Agriculture activity has remained reasonably insulated from the lockdown despite experiencing some labour and transportation related disruptions even as activity at
major agriculture wholesale markets seem to be returning to a degree of normalcy. The All India daily electricity demand and rail freight have fallen sharply on a year
on year basis in the lockdown period thus far on expected lines indicating muted economic activity.
There had been green shoots seen in the rural economy before the coronavirus pandemic as in some improvement in tractor sales, recovery in food prices along with
the positive sentiment from the expectation of a strong Rabi (winter crop) harvest. While rural demand would be comparatively more insulated even now as compared
to urban consumption, there is a possibility of migrant labour exodus and lack of employment opportunities adversely impacting rural consumption sentiment to some
extent. Overall most of the consumption indicators are expected to be weak in the near term with the discretionary consumption such as airline ticket sales, vehicle
sales and air-conditioner sales expected to be severely impacted.
The equity market with take near term cues from the data points around the emerging trajectory of coronavirus cases in India which as of now seems to be in
manageable proportions. Moreover, there is an expectation of a partial lifting of lockdown in a staggered manner and a gradual opening up of economic activity. News
flow around the expected relaxation of the lock-down to some extent and a possible second round of fiscal stimulus from the government to support some of the most
affected sectors of the economy can be the possible triggers for the relative performance of the Indian equity market in the near term.
We believe that the significant correction seen in the Indian equity market will present an attractive entry point for a long-term investor with a 3-5 year view as the
rebound in the economic activity and consequently the recovery in earnings would be sharp in the medium term once the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic is
behind us.

Fund Facts
Fixed Income Strategy:
The fixed income market in India has had many tailwinds going for it over the last year in the form of a series of repo rate reduction from the RBI coupled with
extraordinary liquidity measures undertaken by the RBI to maintain the liquidity in surplus. These actions of the RBI has been in a backdrop of benign interest rates
maintained by the global central banks to support sub-par growth and muted inflationary pressures across large economies of the world.
On the domestic front, we believe that over the fiscal FY 2021 we would see more easing in the repo rate from the RBI to support the weak economic growth,
especially as the inflationary pressures are expected to remain tepid on the back of a slowdown in domestic demand, bumper food grain production and low oil prices.
Moreover, we could see the RBI augment liquidity and improve transmission of the interest rate reductions with a range of conventional and unconventional tools at
their disposal. We opine that these measures would keep the interest rates in the economy lower for longer.
While there is a risk of fiscal slippage and the relentless supply of Government securities and State Development Loans which could impart some pressure in the fixed
income space, we remain constructive on the Indian fixed income space on the back of an expectation of continued monetary policy action as well as the sustained
efforts of the RBI to improve liquidity and support the weak domestic demand conditions.
Equity Strategy:
The current situation pertaining to the spread of the Covid-19 as a global pandemic as well as the subsequent lockdown of a large part of the world economy as a
response to contain the spread of the virus, both have resulted in unprecedented times across the globe. India has not been immune to the demand destruction seen
across the world of a magnitude not witnessed in decades.
In India, the banking sector that was just emerging out of the long and painful corporate NPA cycle may see a build-up of stress from the retail/MSME space, given
that the small businesses are expected to bear the brunt of lockdown situation.
While the slew of measures announced by the government in its stimulus package will help most industries bear the immediate impact of slowdown, the timing and
extent of a medium to long term recovery remains uncertain as yet, given the severity of lockdown in the key demand regions.
The government has also taken the opportunity to unleash long term reforms across agriculture and industry and so a host of sectors should benefit from them in the
long run. Moreover, the initiatives undertaken by the government and the domestic industries would be key to tap the opportunity of businesses moving out of China.
We believe that as the world opens to the new normal, there would be large churn in the prospects of many sectors as there could be long term structural damage
to some sectors even as there could be a surge in some sectors linked to the theme of increased digitization driving economic activity.
While the equity market correction in recent times have presented significant opportunities for investment, we would evaluate stocks based on the company’s inherent
strength to withstand slowdown and benefit from the long-term opportunity thereafter.
We believe that the significant correction seen in the Indian equity market will present an attractive entry point for a long-term investor with a 3-5 year view as the
rebound in the economic activity and consequently the recovery in earnings would be sharp in the medium term once the uncertainty of the coronavirus pandemic
is behind us. We reiterate that we are positive about the Indian economy in the long term and would suggest that the policy holders stay invested for the long term
for wealth creation.
Risks
Fixed Income-Key risks
The key risks in the fixed income portfolio are:
Credit Risk: Bonds / debentures as well as other money market instruments issued by corporate run the risk of down grading by the rating agencies and even
default in the worst case scenario. Securities issued by central/state governments have lesser to zero probability of credit/ default risk in view of the sovereign status
of the issuer. To reduce the risk of default, we follow the credit category allocation limit, with limit for maximum investment in each rating category.
Liquidity Risk: The Indian debt market is such that a large percentage of the total traded volumes on certain days are concentrated in a few securities. Traded
volumes for particular securities differ significantly on a daily basis. Consequently, the fund may have to incur a significant “impact cost” while transacting large
volumes in a particular security. To mitigate the impact cost for large transactions, the schemes will invest a higher proportion in liquid and traded debt instruments
including government securities. The fund’s investments are long term in nature and hence it is not required to maintain high level of liquidity. The fund keeps
sufficient liquid instruments to ensure that it can manage liquidity risk in a reasonable manner.
Risk due to concentration: We diversify the portfolio to reduce the concentration risk. The concentration limits for a single corporate credit is also well defined.
Industry / sector exposure is restricted as a percentage of the portfolio.
Equity-Key risks
The key risks in the equity portfolio are:
Risk of loss of value: Investments in equity and equity related securities involve a degree of risks and investors should not invest in equity schemes unless they
can afford to take the risk of losing the value of the investment.
Concentration Risk in equity: In order to ensure that the portfolio is well diversified and to mitigate the risk of concentration, exposure to a single stock would be
restricted to 10% of the value of the equity part of the portfolio at the time of purchase of the share. Exposure to a single sector is also capped to the total value of
the portfolio to minimize the concentration risk.
