Review on Task-Based Approach

In the slide given to us, I have comprehended that task-based approach could be a good

teaching pedagogy in English Grammar. According to the slide presented by Dr. Gonzales, task

based approach has a definite defined outcome where the participants are free to choose the

language or linguistic resource for a given task. Moreover, this approach is very significant to

every student because it creates an avenue enhance his or her fluency of the English grammar.

Task based approach allows the learners to complete a certain task (might be related to real life

scenarios) while acquiring the target language.

I must say that this approach is very helpful in the acquisition of language. As I

understood in the given slide, the learners are allowed to use whatever language they desire in

completing the task. This leads them to focusing on the meaning rather than the form. I guess

this is somehow beneficial for both students and the teachers/facilitators. It is for the reason that

learners are comfortable expressing themselves and creating an inviting atmosphere to converse

to other learners. However, this idea could somehow be a disadvantage of the approach. When

students are given freedom to choose whatever language to use, their fluency in utterance

increase, but the accuracy of the target language is not met sometimes.

When I have done it in my own classes, my students are very engaged at first to talk and

share their ideas about a particular task. However, when I noticed that my students are still

having a difficult time mastering the target language (English), I began to encourage them to
speak English more than their preferred language. Hence, it leads me to realization that this

approach has its own share of advantages and disadvantages. Balancing fluency and accuracy in

using this task based approach in teaching and learning English is where the role of the teachers

begins.
