figures, unless otherwise stated.

Mathematics for Applied Science (AMA1003)

SECTION A (60 MARKS)

Answer ALL questions.

Al. (a) Convert 5678 pmol/cm2 to Tmol/Gm2 . Present your answer in scientific
notation to three significant figures. (5 marks)

(b) Solve the equation

3(32*) + 10(3*) = 6(9*) + 3.

(5 marks)

A2. (a) Simplify the expression

logy*

(5 marks)

(b) Solve the equation

In x + (In 10) -\gx = \ne2.
(5 marks)

A3. Differentiate the following functions with respect to x.

(a) (2x - 1)4(1 - 3x)6 (5 marks)

(b) (5 marks)
tan2x

A4. (a) Evaluate the integral

I (5 - x)(2x + 7)dx.
J-2
(5 marks)

(b) Integrate the expression -—— — with respect to x. (5 marks)

A5. (a) Evaluate the integral

r5
(S + 7x)3dx.

(4 marks)

(b) Using the Trapezoidal Rule with n = 4, find the approximate value of the
expression below. Leave your final answer to three decimal places.

f 7x)3 \nxdx

(6 marks)

A6. Below is a figure that shows that shaded region bounded by the straight line

y = 12 - x and the curve y = (jc - 5)2 + 1. A and B are the x-coordinates of the two
intersecting points of the straight line and the curve.

V = (* - 5)2 + 1

y = 12 - x

(a) Show that A = 2 and B = 7. (3 marks)

(b) Hence, find the area of the shaded region. (7 marks)

SECTION B (40 MARKS)

Answer ALL questions.

Bl. A particle moves in a straight line such that its displacement s in metres from a fixed
point 0 on the line is given by

s = 1 — 60t + lit2 — It3, where t is measured in seconds.

Find,

(i) the initial displacement, velocity and acceleration of the particle from 0.

(5 marks)

(ii) the maximum velocity that the particle can achieve and show that this is

indeed the maximum velocity. (4 marks)

(iii) the times when the particle comes to an instantaneous rest. (3 marks)

(iv) the distance travelled from t = ltot = 1.5. (3 marks)

(v) the distance travelled from t = 0 to t = 6. (5 marks)

B2. (a) Find the particular solution for the following differential equation, given the
condition.
f'(x) = (4x + 6)3;
/(-I) = -1
(5 marks)

(b) Verify that y is a particular solution for the given differential equation.
y = (2x + 7)4;
V7 = 2Vy
(5 marks)

(c) The rate of water filling up a water tank, —, is given by the expression

dQ _Q + 2Qt
~dt~ 2Q2

where Q is the amount of water (in cm3) in the water tank at time t in seconds
since the water starts filling up the tank.
Given that the water tank is empty at the start of the process,
(i) find Q in terms of t. (6 marks)
(ii) find the amount of water in the tank when t = 3. (1 mark)
(iii) find the time taken to fill up the whole water tank, given its capacity is
V600 cm3. (3 marks)
