overall win in 2020. Speedway’s biggest event of the year. People came
from all over the country for three days of racing. Racers
represented West Virginia, Texas, Florida, New Mexico
and New York, to name a few. Engines revved from the
track and dust filled the air, forming a cloud that could be
seen from the highway. It was a large gathering celebrating
life and racing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Magnolia
Motor Speedway posted on its website that masks were
encouraged but not required, and most people opted not to
wear them.
Even when the stands aren’t filled to the brim, when
it’s not the biggest night of the year, many regulars gather
to spend Saturday nights at The Mag throughout the
summer. On any event night, families cluster around the
track. Some lean on fences, others set up lawn chairs in the
stands, others sit atop their RVs or trucks. One thing is for
sure: going to the racetrack on Saturday is a whole family
affair. Between each race kids run down to the stretch of
grass that separates the audience from the track. They
throw footballs, play tag, wave flags, and watch the winners
as they celebrate in victory lane. When the next race is
about to begin, the announcer tells everyone to back away
from the fence and all the kids scatter, returning to their
families in the stands.
