7.3.2 Wrist Bearing & Boom Adapter Replacement


7.3.2.1 Boom Adapter and Wrist
Gear Removal
1. Place the felling head in the upright
position on flat level ground.

2. Refer to the applicable carrier workshop


manual and vent the hydraulic tank on
the carrier.

3. Remove the hoses’ guard in the boom


adapter. Tag and disconnect all
hydraulic hoses from the boom adapter
(3 locations). Plug all fittings and tubes.

4. Remove the pins

5. Back the carrier away from the felling head.
6. Attach a suitable lifting device to the boom
adapter. Support the weight of the boom
adapter using an overhead crane or portable
hoist.

7. Remove the bolts and washers attaching the


boom adapter to the felling head and
remove the boom adapter.
8. Remove the bolts attaching the fixation plate
and remove it. If necessary, two bolts may
be used ( A ) like a puller.

9. Remove the wrist gear. If necessarry, two


bolts may be used ( B ) like a puller.

10. Repair or replace as required.


11. Install the wrist gear and the boom adapter
in reverse order. Torque bolts as per bolt
torque with Loctite™ 277.

7.3.2.2 Gear Segment Removal
1. Remove the bolts, washers and locknuts
( central segment only ) from each gear
segment.

2. Screw two bolts into threaded holes to


remove the gear segment.
3. Knock the back of the gear segment with
a hammer to eliminate jamming as the
screws are turned.
4. Ensure all parts are clean and free of
grease for assembly.

5. Assemble in reverse order with hexagonal


head screws, washers and locknuts ( if
required ). Note: Use
Loctite™ 277

6. Torque the bolts to 150 lb. ft. (203 Nm) in


the sequence illustrated.

7. Repeat step 6 and torque to 250 lb. ft.


(338 Nm).
8. Repeat step 6 and torque to 378 lb. ft.
(510 Nm) always with Loctite™ 277.
9. Repeat step 6 to 8 for each segments.
10. For center segment only, put locknuts
on bolts 1, 2, 4 & 5 and torque them to
180 lb. Ft. (203 Nm).
Note: Use Loctite™ 277.

7.3.2.3 Wrist Bearing Removal
1. Remove the boom adapter and the center
gear as shown in 7.3.2.1.
2. Use a suitable lifting device and a portable
hoist to assist in bearing removal.

3. Remove the bolts from the wrist bearing and


remove the parts ( male and female bearing
and wear plate ). O-rings should be replaced
upon re-assembly.

4. Replace the grease fittings ( qty: 4 ) on the


female wrist bearing.

5. Clean or replace the wrist bearings and the


wear plate as required.

6. Install the wrist bearing, wear plate and o-


rings in reverse order. Torque bolts as per
bolt torque with Loctite™ 277.

7.3.2.4 Balancing Frame Removal
1. Remove the boom adapter and the
center gear as shown in 7.3.2.1.

2. Remove L.H. and R.H. wrist cylinder,


pin retainer bolts, washers, spacers and
pins from the rod end.
3. Attach a suitable lifting device to the
balancing frame. Support the weight of
the balancing frame using an overhead
crane or portable hoist.

4. Remove the cap screws (1) and the
lockwasher (2).

5. Install a shim (3) exceeding the pin by at


least 1/8».
6. Re-install the lockwasher (2) and cap
screws (1).

7. Remove the bolts from the taper cap

8. Remove the taper pin by tightening the


bolts on the lock washer in the sequence
illustrated. Bolts should be tightened to a
torque no more than 120 lb. ft. (163 Nm).

9. A hammer and 1 1/2» drift pin (4) may be


used to assist removal of the pin.

10. Lift the balancing frame clear of the felling


head.

11. Repair or replace the balancing frame as


required.

7.3.2.5 Balancing Frame Pin &
Bushing Assembly
Important!
Use oil on the taper cap, taper pin and cap
screws before final assembly. Never use
anti-seize on taper cap and pin.

1. Insert the taper cap into the boom adapter


and install the bolts lightly tightened to hold
position for the taper pin alignment.
Note! Depending on the model of the boom
adapter and the taper cap, a lock pin (see 4.1)
must be use between the boom adapter and the
taper cap. Quantity varies with models.
2. Carefully, insert the taper pin by aligning
the holes.

3. Tighten the bolts in sequence as illustrated.


Torque the bolts as per bolt torque with
Loctite™ 277.
Note! It may be necessary to repeat step 3
several times before obtaining the recommended
torque on all bolts.

4. Tighten the bolts previously installed


securing the taper cap to the boom
adapter. Torque the bolts as per bolt
torque.
Note! Depending on the model of the boom
adapter and the taper cap, the number of bolts can
varied.

5. Check the distance between the outer
face of the taper cap and the taper pin.
A reference distance of 0.88 “ minimum
should be obtained.

6. Insert the bushing in the balancing


frame. Position as illustrated. Install the
o-rings as illustrated below.

7. Insert the balancing frame on the taper


pin.

8. Replace the lock washer and the bolts in
sequence shown. Before the tightening,
verify if you need spacers ( see section
7.3.3 ). After, torque bolts as per bolt
torque with Loctite™ 277.

9. Replace the grease fitting in the taper pin.

10. Re-position the R.H. and L.H. cylinder rod


ends. Install the pins, spacers, washers
and bolts. Torque the bolt as per bolt
torque.

7.3.3 Gap Checking & Shim Installation


1. Carefully, press the Balancing Frame
against the Boom Adapter. Balancer Boom
Gap Frame Adapter
2. Measure the distance between the lock Lock
washer and the balancing frame. The Washer
recommended play is 0.03”

3. If the gap is too high, use shims to


reduce it. Several shims could be
necessary to fill the play. Shims

4. Three thicknesses of shim are


available:
1/32” no. 0536006
1/16” no. 0536005
1/8” no. 0536004
Note!
It’s important to respect the recommended
play in order to permit the free movement
of the Balancing Frame.
